I have been trying for a year to get an increase but they flat out refuse and I don't understand why. I've had the QS1 for 2 1/2 years and it's still at $500. I've had limit increases from all the other cards I have within the last year. My scores are as follows: FICO Bankcard Score: EQ:773, TU: 722 & EX: 716. I would think these scores are good enough for higher than $500. Hardly worth keeping open. Use it now just to auto pay Netflix, Lifelock and Experian each month. Auto pay off each month. Anyone experience same with Capital One?

Yeah same here. I've had the card approx since Feb & they said at the time with good standing I would be eligible for an increase after 6 months. In April I tried anyway & they gave me $100 increase for a total of $400 😂. Like you I have other accounts granting me more generous CLIs so will see how the rest of the year pans out.

Even though CapOne has tightened up on their customers recently they'll still give them when you show regular usage and (if not full then at least several times more than minimum) timely payments on the account for at least the several month prior submitting any CLI request. Just having a small monthly recurring charge like Netflix is not gonna cut it with them. CapOne's reasoning is If you're not gonna use the card regularly why would they give a larger CL when the one you have currently is sufficent?

Another thing that may be holding your account back from receiving CLIs is the account terms when you got the card. It seems whatever credit profile you had when you get the card seems to get stuck on that profile. So even if your scores have improved since you received the card it's sometimes really hard to get out of those clutches. It's why some people just re-app with the Venture to get a high SL and then transfer it back to their main driver like the QS after the 6 month waiting period for combinations.

Nope and Cap1 is on my chopping block.

Secured card for 3yrs only got a $200 credit steps increase won't give me anything else or unsecure the card.

Same deal with my QS1.

3yrs old, got $250 credit steps increase to $750 and I hit the request button a few months ago and gave me a whole $100 more.

The limits are fine as I don't have any interest in using a company who doesn't treat me well, but to not at least upgrade one of my cards to no AF?

Not to mention a HP on all 3 if I try to apply for a regular card with the possibility of getting a bit more.

I think they are great for rebuilders but they don't tend to grow with you, at least that's my experience.

My personal experience is my very first card many years ago was the CapOne Platinum. Even when I had PC'd the card to the QS a year or two after they released that card I couldn't get it to budge from the 2k limit it had despite the fact I was putting close to 2-3k a month on it with multiple payments on it to keep a $0 balance. Finally, what I had to do was re-app a new actual starting QS with my vastly improved credit profile and was able to pull their lowest APR with a 10k SL instant approval. That was a few years ago and now the card is sitting at $17k because that more than fits my needs and don't want to poke the bear. I use my other "QS" as a builder for my sisters that I gladly give them the card for because of the age of the card (13 yrs), payment history and it's a small enough limit that if they go crazy with it it would be something I can take care of easily anyways.

@Anonymous wrote:

@Justagirl73 wrote:

If you acquired your Cap1 during your rebuild, it kinda caps out and will not grow. Hit the prequal page on the CapOne website and see what offers you get from there. If you get offers for their QS/Venture cards with solid APRs then I would bite the bullet. Of course if you're not totoally sure just make a post here and find out what others have to say.

I can apply for another Cap1 card from August onwards, that being the six-month point.

If you go this route I would only recommend doing this if your credit profile has improved moderately from when you first got your other card. Hit the prequal page on the CapOne website and see what offers you get from there. If you get offers for their QS/Venture cards with solid APRs then I would bite the bullet. Of course if you're not totoally sure just make a post here and find out what others have to say.

Agreed. I'm in the garden for the next few months anyway, since I had a bit of a spree over the past six weeks culminating in my getting the Penfed Power Cash Rewards, so I need to let my scores recover from the new-account hit, pay down existing balances and start developing history and aging on the new cards. I think I should probably wait until at least October, or preferably November, before trying for another card. I don't have a TU FICO score for February (when I was approved for the unsecured Platinum that was PC'ed to Quicksilver) but it was 627 the next month, March, and is at 646 as of the end of June, though this will take a new-account ding so I need to give it some time to let it bounce back up. (EX and EQ are at least 20 points higher.)

Oh, definitely. Gardening and tending to what your have already is always a solid plan. Once those new cards hit a year the credit score ding should be minimalized from the AAoA and inquiries you took.

My scores are as follows: FICO Bankcard Score: EQ:773, TU: 722 & EX: 716. I would think these scores are good enough for higher than $500. Hardly worth keeping open. Use it to auto pay Netflix each month. Auto pay off each month. Anyone experience same with Capital One?

netflix is not going to get you anywhere. cap1 has had a rash of defaults the past quarter so they might be filtering a bit different but the same mostly holds true for them. assuming your profile does not suck if you max the card and pif over and over you should see a decent cli. I helped a few friends in the 500s that got $300 limits and 2 months in they are both >$2K on the cards. one is a 45 year old woman that never had a card but had several cap1 store cards. you should 100% target any card you want an increase with imo

My husbands card is used for exactly the same reason, netflix bill, and they will not raise the amount due to low utilization. So I would suggest putting more on it and PIF. My personal Cap1 card is used for lost of differente things with large payments and I request CLI every 6 M and they increase the amount every 6 M.

Over the past year I've run about 1k a month on my Quicksilver. Started at 500$ limit, moved up to $2500 6 months in and now at 6k 12 months in. Like others have said, they most definitely like seeing you use the card often before they give you increases.

I use my Amex card for just about everything. I have a $9000 limit on it. Started at just $1000 a year and half ago. Also, Discover just increased my limit to $8800 from $7000. You can't do much with $500 or risk hurting the utilization percentage. I believe using a card responsibly should be rewarded, not penalized like Capital One does.

From my own experience......

I started rebuiling exactly a year ago, starting with QS1, 1000 SL. After 6 month, auto CLI to 4000 and pc to QS. After another 6 months, sp CLI to 7000. IMO, when your card changes to QS, you are out of that rebuilding bucket.

A few days ago was exactly a year, and I got Venture 15000 SL. My payments all along have been around 1200 to 1800 each month.
