@Anonymous wrote:
Holy crap, I had never heard of balance chasing. Is/was this a normal practice? I just don't see the point outside of being spiteful for the sake of being spiteful. What advantage would this serve the lender over just closing the account while you pay down remaining balance or send it to collections if you weren't making min payments? Interest earned on <$X amount > is the same regardless if that amount is 9%or 90% of credit limit, right? Clearly they wanted you out, why the slow rubbing on Salt on the wounds while doing so?

When the 2007-2008 Financial crisis hit, they flat closed out customers who weren't paying fast enough and they didn't want to keep. Those who they wanted to keep they "balance chased" - probably because they figured they would stop balance chasing when the CL got down to "toy" card limits. Chase Bank balance chased me from $10,000 to $200 where they stopped. Why do it this way? Maybe to maintain the illusion that they wanted you as a customer, just not with a CL you could actually use. Remember - in those days credit cards were shedding customers and shredding CLs. All they really did was drive otherwise solvent customers into defaults and drive their best customers away. The funny thing is.... when this happened I was within 6 months of paying them all (the credit card companies) off any way. I got so angry with them that when I figured out what they were doing I stopped paying them and left the country for 3 years. They ended up charging off over $150K which was never paid and it all came off my CRA files earlier this year. They screwed me, I screwed them back is how I see it. Now that my CRA files are clean and I have solid 700's all around I simply refuse to play that game again.

Various card issuers have developed reputations for being stingy, unfriendly or outright hateful (looking at you Barclay's) when it comes to how they issue credit & treat customers. Lackluster rewards, stingy limits, refusing to grow, CLD's and well all other kinds of things that make you wonder why you stick with them other then necessity of total available credit or killer rewards. Was interested to see who you guys count amongst your least loved.

For me it's currently wells fargo. While they were my bedrock during my early rebuild along with cap 1,they only grew with me but so much then got downright spiteful. For ref they've been our primary bank for nearly 10 years after they devoured Wachovia (rip) and we've got nearly a dozen accounts&products with them all in good standing.

No they won't PC my oldest card, a rewardsless graduated secured & I get that. But they also won't boost the limit past the $1600 it's been at since doubling at graduation. In 2011. Flat no. They also won't increase limit on my old 1% cash (soon to be a signature) card or consider updating the rewards program to meet current rates but hey, they can offer me 1.35% back after I push 50k through the 6.5k card in 6 months or less! Who wouldn't take that?

Can I combine the $1600 card into the larger cards limit & close the first? Of course we can combine them for you sir, just fill out this application and then after a hard inquiry if we decide to approve a limit matching the current combined limit we'll open that account for you with a brand new age of 0 months and close your old ones for you.

Surprising surely none of you, we're nearly complete in moving all our banking needs to nfcu & a local union. Keeping the soon to be signature visa indefinitely but it'll get token maintenance use at best. All my above griefs don't even consider the countless scandals the company can't seem to stop. Thanks for getting me back on my feet credit wise but you kinda suck WF.

Barclays. I had the Ring and Cashforward and I closed them last year because of all the posts I saw that they were AA'ing people because they are jealous.

It stressed me out thinking they would do it to me. I got sick and tired of checking my accounts 3 times a day.

So I just closed them. I felt so much better.

Barclays was waiting for people to post a medium to large balance and then issuing a CLD seemingly to be as hateful as possible by jacking up utilization right? I feel that was a popular AA complaint with them

For me, it was definitely Barclays. I had a overly generous 1000 CL on my rewards MasterCard. I might have spent $50 a month and paid in full every month and never reported to balance. But, then they saw that I had a new girlfriend or two or 10 in my wallet. So in a single spiteful move, They CLD me down to $500 and refused to restore it to the $1k that it was. My profile had improved considerably since the card was issued, somewhere around 130 points. And I showed 2% utilization across all of my cards. Bad things had aged off of my reports, and been deleted. But, being the jealous girlfriend that they are, they want to be your only one.. And they weren't my only one. So we had a nasty break up, ending with another call to the portfolio management department, where I pretty much told them to FOAD, and my scissors, which had the card into little pieces. I have no use for Barclays They suck

SlightlyRemoved- my girlfriend has a completely different relationship with Barclays. She puts huge BT's on her card two or three times a year, I am talking 95% utilization on a $10,000 limit. They don't care. No AA. They are so selective, but one thing I am pretty sure of is that they do not like people with a lot of cards. My girlfriend has three cards, theirs, Wells Fargo, and Chase That's it.

Any and all cards issued by Comenity - the store cards because of the APR and the Bank Cards because .... you can read all the stories on this forum of the net. I won't do business with Comenity period. Barclays I have had no issues with, currently have the CashForward and RING, they have given me CLI's on both and they don't really seem to care if I carry a balance or not.

Now on the other hand, AMEX is by far my least favorite issuer - while I do have an original Optima with a small limit and very good APR, I only keep it open because its dated member since 1978, I would not be interested in a "Platinum card with the AF waived every year" I just refuse to get back in bed with AmEx. It's a long story which I'm not going to repeat here (again on myFico).

Bottom line, Comenity = will not do business with ever, AmEx = officially I do business with them because I have an active account I run maybe $200 through every year, but I have no interest in ever improving my/our relationship.

He called and they sent him a new one to his house. We got the bill for thousands of dollars. We wrote and called them many times saying this card had been cancelled and we had it our possesion. They claimed we had reopened it using his address for card but ours for billing. The account finally went to collections and we had our atorney sue the former employee and the collection agency. Then it went away. At one point we were getting 5 calls a day about it. We even had the police report. I still hate them over this.

If I had to pick just one, it would be Bank of America. They cancelled my card right after my divorce (2001) when times were tough. No warning. Just a letter saying they no longer wanted my business. Please pay off the balance.

NFCU, PFCU (now PenFed), and Citbank (now Citi) all stuck by me in that difficult time, and I appreciate that. I didn't have any credit cards with First Union (now Wells Fargo), but they screwed me over with respect to my checking account. They had been my primary bank for 26 years (1974-2000).

My opinion of Citi later changed. Soon after The Card Act was enacted, I cancelled my $40K Citi card and continued to faithfully pay down my $35K outstanding balance. Within a few months, Citi jacked up the APR from 15% to 24% to punish me.

Oddly enough, once I had paid off the Citi card with the high balance, I found myself within a few months of retirement, and with lingering debts due to my youngest child's needing 6.5 years to compete his 4 year undergraduate degree. To my surprise, Citi offered me a Simplicity card with a 21 month 0% balance transfer. I moved most of my NFCU balance to Simplicity. I paid in full in month 20 of 21. According to Citi, they saved me $1700 in interest charges, and I am grateful for that.

I've been debt free now for almost 3 years. I have forgiven both Bank of America and Citi. I would do business with them again, but neither bank has a credit card that meets my needs. The irony is that I live within a 15 minute walk of local branches of both banks.

Great thread, interesting read.

I hate Bank of America.

Due to my physical address, and the addresses of siblings, parents, and children, we ran a LOT of dollars through that bank...kind of a poor mans wire transfer if you will. (We all had access to the same account, and all had a BofA branch near our respective homes...nationwide.)

Finally got a CC with them a few years back, kept it under 50% util, but was using a zero interest introductory offer, so they slashed the limit to 50% effectively maxing out the card...30 days later (or so) they decided that they didn't like the card being maxed out, so they closed it for me....

....duh....

I avoid them like the plague now.
