I wonder if this is based on previous spend on the card. My offer was for 2500 miles for $5500 in spend. It's still free miles, but interesting there's such wildly different spend levels.

I had this card from its inception until 18 months ago when I downgraded it to the MileagePlus Explorer. It was a great card in many ways, but the annual fee was simply too high.

It's certainly a niche card, but for those who are United flyers and use clubs 30+ times a year, $450 a year for the highest miles per dollar earning out there (except dining/travel on CSR/CSP) and Club access is an easy choice.

I was a United 1K in 2012, the year that the card was first issued. I earned my 1K mostly through business travel, and that ended when I retired in mid-2013. I should have downgraded the card when the first annual fee was billed in May 2013, but I stupidly kept the card until May 2016. I earned a lot of United miles using the card. I got to use the United clubs a few times, and I used the US Airways clubs until they left the Star Alliance to join One World.

I don't doubt your logic for moving on, and I'm sure the day will come when my 1K galavanting comes to an end and I too will question the utility when I visit the club 5 times a year instead of 40.

The irony, of course, is that a 1K usually has good chances of being upgraded to business class on international flights, and when that happens, you're entitled to enter the club even without a club membership card. The Chase MileagePlus Club card is only helpful when you don't get upgraded. The rules are probably different for domestic flights, but most of my United travel was international.

I got the "5000 miles for $3000 spend" offer on my United Explorer.

It moved from the safe to my wallet in about 12 seconds flat.

I'm not churning now so I take what I can get

Did that come to you in an email or when you logged into the Chase website? I'm asking because I have an Explorer, too, but haven't seen this offer (yet).

It was an email. I seldom use the card, but I had just charged and paid off an 1800 flight package.

don't know if that had anything to do with it though
