On 10-7-17, I received an email from Capital One asking, "Do you recognize this purchase"? I did not recognize the purchase so I immediately logged onto my Capital One online account and saw 5 unauthorized charges all for the same day totaling about $350. I then called Capital One to report that my Quicksilver card information had been compromised. I still had the card in my possession and the last place I used it was Walmart about 2 weeks prior to that, ( I rarely ever use my Capital One card). The Capital One customer service agent was very nice and promptly cancelled my card, advised me I wouldn't be liable for any unauthorized charges and they would send me out a new card with a new card number right away which I received a few days later.

Anyway, in this day and age I highly recommend signing up for text/email alerts from your credit card companies so you know everytime your credit cards are used and I also recommend using credit cards in lieu of debit cards, as the consumer is typically not responsible for fraudulent activity on a credit card as long as it is promptly reported, as with a debit card, they have access to your entire checking/savings accounts.

Just my 2 cents worth!

My (newish) QS1 card automatically turned on the Android app notifications without telling me. Freaked me out when I went to put a $4 charge on at Walmart and literally 1/2 second later my phone made a weird noise and I saw it was an alert!

Nice feature, actually.

A good way to easiliy montior this for those of us who have a lot of credit cards and accounts is to set up everything on MINT, and you can just do a quick cursory glance of all charges once a day. Also useful for just general personal finance and net worth tracking, etc. I use it mostly for seeing where I'm spending too much, but its very useful for seeing any unusual charges on any account my spouse and I have.

I've heard my phone ding from the email alert before I even pull my card back out of the gas pump. Chase Alerts are the best in my wallet.

Discover is a close second and BofA just stinks in that regard.

I'm sorry to hear your card was compromised, but I'm glad to hear Capital One took care of it in an efficient manner!

If you have Android the Capital One notifications are provided with the Wallet app (it's separate from the Capital One Mobile App). I have both installed on my phone; their features overlap a bit, but there are some things you can only do with one or the other (for example, the Wallet app provides alerts for each transaction in real-time, but to make a payment you have to use the 'regular' Capital One Mobile App).

I've been super-pleased overall with Capital One - they can be quirky with some things, but their security is a good fit for my spending patterns. I do get the occasional text asking if a purchase was legit (in addition to the real-time alert), but it's almost always for purchases that are out-of-pattern and it's not so often to be annoying.

It's amusing to be making a purchase in Wal-Mart and have the Wallet app notify me of the charge I just made while I'm still at the register.

(Note that if you're on iOS I don't know if the functionality is split into two apps or not... in any case I'm hoping eventually they'll merge the functions into one app with Android.)

I have apps in my phone for all my cards and they are all set up to alert every time any card is charged. If I get a ping when I don't have my card in my hand I know to check it and see if it's something I'm ok with. If not I can call right after it happens.

I feel like swipe or possible fraud alerts are essential for any cardholder.

Sorry to hear about your situation. My QS card was also compromised a few months ago. I have the Wallet app, so I immediately received alerts for two fraudulent charges. When I called CO, I found out someone tried to make ~7 purchases. Smh. Thank goodness for reliable fraud detection!

Amex does this for me when someone makes a purchase without swiping the actual card. I like this. I've had a few, what the ...moments when I got the alert for a certain amount and forgot I set up reoccurring payments for things.

I had the same thing to happen to me back in January of this year, $ 515 per swipe, two swipes. Called up cap1 and got new card, didn't have to eat the cost. Also I have Lifelock, not too bad. With them I have all accounts, drivers license, bank accounts, insurance, ect being monitored daily. It's kind of a pain with the notifications or phone calls, it's worth it. On the individual accounts I have most of my transaction alerts set to around $1 (sorry if this seems excessive, but it's my money) and that seem to work well for me!

I just recently changed my alert to $1.00 also. I would rather be alerted to every credit card purchase and catch it right away rather than not know it until it's considered "suspicious".
