Received $500 toy limit card back on May 31, 2017 with pretty putrid FICO8 (EX @ 636, TU @ 654, Chase pulled both with a prequalified offer on my Chase login).

Ran it up to $490, statement cut, PIF to $0, updated report to $0 -- repeated this for June, July, August, September, October. No auto CLI. Since the card only offers 1.5% versus my Discover first year of 2% with bonus, I'm just waiting for the November statement to cut and PIF it -- I just paid $330 or so, left 25% to report, then PIF. Going forward the card will get around 28% usage ($140) minimum per month and PIF before statement cuts -- I actually don't mind using all $500 monthly because I bank my URs for hopes that some day I'll snag CSR and that 1.5% becomes 2.25% automatically, which makes it a great general spend card from now until whenever I can get Discover IT Miles (3% with the first year bonus cashback). So for November through February I'll give the card somewhere between $140 and $490 of activity on my non-category spend and see.

My guess, though, is that these toy limit cards that Chase and Amex are giving to people with somewhat subprime scores are going to be fixed CLIs for probably a year -- and who knows if for longer.

I do hear that manual CLI requests may pull EX which is good because I project my EX to go to 760 or so by summer 2018 so by then maybe I'll do a TU inquiry since most of mine will be over 12 months old.

I also wonder if the folks who got automatic CLIs may have been below 5/24 -- not that we have any data points, but I'm curious if Chase is jealous.

I’m not necessarily the data point you’re looking for but I started with a $2,000 limit on a SW RR Plus card in April. I ran $3,000 through it in the first billing cycle. I paid in full weekly. The next billing cycle was about 50% utilization, also PIF weekly. I didn’t let a balance report at all. On the 3rd billing cycle, Chase auto-CLI me $1,500 for a total CL of $3,500. At the time, I was below 5/24.

However, no auto-CLI love at the 6-mo mark however. But I’ve been a busy guy since then with 6 new cards (4 reporting).

My mother has CSP that is approaching the 6-mo mark and she utilizes in the 15% range with no auto-CLI love.

My offers on CCJ and CardMatch showed up the same day so I logged into Chase and they showed up there as well: Freedom and Freedom Unlimited. I snagged FU and the next day the other offer was gone.

FU earns 1.5% on all purchases in URs that you can cash out at 1c per UR. But if you have a Chase Sapphire you can get more for each UR: 1.25c per UR for CSP or 1.5c per UR for CSR.

That makes me URs worth 1.875% if I get CSP or 2.25% with CSR. I only am earning about $7/month now with ~$490 monthly spend but if I ever get CSR that'll be increased to $10.50 per month which is better than my other general spend cards.

I'm not sure if the 5% on Freedom would be worth 7.5% with CSR but I assume so. If so, this is a slam dunk category card except for Discover 5% with first year match making it 10% on categories for year one.

If I ever get prequal for CSP before March 2018 I'll move my general spend to FU and hope I can snag a CSR in the near future. If not, in March or April I should prequal for Discover IT Miles which is an amazing 3% cash back card the first year -- on any category purchased.

But right now the $500 toy limit is impossible to work with. I booked around $6000 in sea travel just in October and couldn't put more than 5% on FU because each booking was over $500. Ridiculous limit.

Chase even knows my income for 20 years in a row, I'm hoping that helps. I started putting $500 every two weeks into the useless Chase savings account in hopes of triggering some internal score increase. APR is like 0.01% lol.

ABCD2199, I have a BCE at a $500 limit that doesn’t seem to grow. No auto-CLI love, though admittedly I think Amex wanted me to maintain a balance for the first 5 statement cuts. I got the card in April 2017 and PIF every month.

Anyway, I understand your frustration. During the first three months, I used the card so frequently that I HAD to make payments every week or so just to be able to use it.

Ultimately, I got frustrated and switched over to my preexisting BOA Cash Rewards. The wild thing is they (Amex) gave me another card with 6 times the limit immediately after they declined me for a 3X CLI on the BCE.

Here’s to hoping they grow your limit soon. 🍻

My projected usage on the $2000 BCP is $500/month for groceries and I date a gal who drives a gas-powered car and she said she'd throw her spend on it and Zelle me so that's $120/month. $2000 is fine since I don't see me using it for any other spend. But I want $6000 just so I can hopefully convince Chase I'm worthy of a $10k CSR.

When Chase approved my FU I had 3 secured cards ($1000, $2500, $3000) and my other cards were brand new and bonus toy limit store cards. So Chase made the right decision for them, obviously.

Plus my unpaid 2010 tax lien still shows on TU which Chase loves to pull but Amex didn't see. Sent my last CMRRR dispute to TU last week over it, CFPB dispute due in December. Maybe nuking that bugger will help, too.

From reading this thread, it sounds like anyone that has received an auto-CLI from Chsae on their card where they aren't spending much on it has a card with a relatively low limit. Are there any exceptions out there to this?

Is there anyone out there that has a higher limit card (5 figures) that puts a spend of 1%-10% (tops) through the card that's seen an auto-CLI?

DW's card is 23 years old. She had a $20-something-k balance transfer around 2007 and then they periodically balance chased her over the next couple of years to $9700 and the limit stayed there for around 6 or 7 years. After it was all paid off, we used it for probably 8 months putting maybe $500-$1500 on it a month. No auto-CLI. She did call and ask for a CLI, and they doubled it to $19,400. Still lower than where it was a decade ago (and lower than the "high balance" column on credit reports) but oh well.

My Freedom card is 10 years old and has seen all patterns of usage (BTs, carrying balances for years, low usage, high usage, maxing out mid-cycle and PIF before statement cut, etc...) and nada. Started at $3,000 and never budged. Merged my $1200 Slate into it in early 2016. Tried to get a CLI on New Years Eve, no go. Had green checkmark in Offers for CSP, so minutes later I tried for that in hopes of combining the HP (no combination, and they double-pulled to boot) and was immediately approved for a $12k starting line immediately after being denied a CLI on a $4200 card. A few months later, the offers came back and I decided to try my luck for Slate for the BT offer. $3500 toy limit, but I reallocated credit lines to $5k each on Freedom and CSP and moved the rest over to make the $9700 Slate. Chase seems to like me but not love me. If I were to apply for a Freedom Unlimited, I'd probably get a training wheels limit under $5k but I bet if I were to app for the Ritz-Carlton, my SL would be somewhere in the $12-25k range. Interestingly, they like me enough that all of my APRs with them are either the lowest published or even lower.

Hope the data points help. Auto-CLIs from Chase are a rare breed indeed and there are many of us that have taken HPs with no luck on CLIs only to be granted a new trade line with bigger limits.

I'm about a year in to my Chase FU and I'm still at the $9800 I started with. Same with my Amazon Prime, I'm at the $4k and I've had it for 10 months. I think Chase is giving me a big FU! :-) Super jealous of those who get the auto increases though!

It definitely seems like Chase, perhaps similar to Capital One, likes to see people apply for new products if they want more credit rather than bumping on their existing lines.

It seems like a best practice if you are looking for a higher limit on an existing card to simply apply for whatever Chase card you feel you'd get the strongest SL on, then move whatever portion of that limit you'd like over to the card you use and want the higher limit on.

I sort of did that with the CSP earlier this year. I wanted the Freedom, but figured a Freedom approval may land me around $5000 based on the data points I had looked up. I knew the CSP would yield me a 5-figure SL, probably closer to $20k (which it did) so I can then downgrade the card to the Freedom when I want and I'll have a nice limit on it. The $500 bonus was also a nice perk compared to the Freedom bonus, of course.

@Anonymous wrote:

From reading this thread, it sounds like anyone that has received an auto-CLI from Chsae on their card where they aren't spending much on it has a card with a relatively low limit. Are there any exceptions out there to this?

Yeah, I tried this by apping the IHG a couple of months ago, thinking I was a shoe-in for a $10K+ limit on it. After a very long manual review (three weeks) I was denied for too many inquiries on my EX. The eventual goal was to move it and my AARP into my Freedom Unlimited and Amazon cards, making a couple of $10K+ cards. I think they just don't want to extend anymore credit to me at this time, and that's OK with me. BoA has treated me really well, and shows no signs of slowing down.
