how much of a credit line to ask for

when applying for credit. how much do you all normally ask for? the few apps that i have briefly looked over, just have a spot to type in what you want.

if you are just looking for approval or something to refresh your credit file with then what do you normally ask for on the application?

for example when i applied with CCCU i just typed in 6000 since i didn't know what to choose i just figured that its a fair number based on my scores. im starting to think that this wasn't smart and that it might back fire in the form of a disapproval.

Call customer service first and ask what their policy is. Sometimes they will tell you if you ask for moe than they are willing to give it will result in a decline but at other times they will come back with a counter-offer. It all depends on the FI.

I say ask for more than you want.

Yes amex does counter offer. In my case, they initially approved a$10.000 request for $2.000. At activation they raised it to $8.500

I don't think AMEX asks what CL you want on the application.

They ask on CLI requests though and they don't counter on these.

Yes they do counter offer and also they will tell you no- but you can call back in such and such days. The reason I say this is because there is such a consensus that you can ask every 31 days but trust me, I know two people on this board including me that were denied CLI and told to re ask in 60 days, etc
