@Anonymous wrote:

Tough question....still figuring out myself. DiscoverIt secured was my first credit card a year and a half ago. I started at a 500 limit, then after 7 months they refunded the deposit and graduated me this past March. They moved me to a 1750 limit. In June, I got approved for a $5000 Citi Costco card. I tried a CLI then and they gave me the "not enough experience with the credit limit" rejection. I kept trying once a month. 2 weeks ago, they sent me the same rejection letter even with a TU credit score of 770. On 12/16, Citi offered me a SP increase for my Citi Costco and they raised my limit by $1500 to $6500. They reported my new limit the next day. 2 days later, I hear from Discover saying that they increased my limit to $2350. Interestingly, I applied for an Amex BCE and they gave me $17000 this month. While Discover is giving me a little LUV it is not happening at a rate as fast as Citi or Amex.

Discover is currently my 2nd most utilized card behind Citi Costco (although the new Amex may take its place). I always pay my balances in full. I did typically let the balance go up to $400-$500 but paid it entirely off before cut date (so my utilization on my reports for the card are typically around 1-2 percent).

Overall, Discover was a great first credit card for me and it will always have a place in my wallet for the 5 percent rotating catagories, the free FICO score, the hassle free service and website. I am a bit frustrated that they are still keeping me at the 23.99 percent apr and a sub $5000 limit despite my credit score but given that I pay in full, it is sufficient to take advantage of the 5 percent rotating catagory spending.

The Discover card -- despite my personal feelings towards their measly limit and insulting APR -- will remain a very useful card in 2018 due to the categories that all align very well with my spending patterns. The Discover Deals is also a very welcome addition to earn even more cash back as well.

Regarding the part in blue, did you PIF before statement cut before or after you got the CLI from Discover? I'm sticking to the AZEO method while I garden for the next 6 months, and I wanted to make sure Discover wouldn't see a few months of 0 reported balance and deny my CLI request for "insufficient transaction activity" or something like that.

So I recently applied for the IT card, which I’ve wanted for awhile and finally got approved. I was shocked it finally happened but on top of that they gave me my best CL at $1,800

I am curious what is the best way to grow the card’s CL?

Since they were so welcoming I’d love to consolidate at some point to this one but I would need that to grow quite a bit

Grats on your approval! Will sit back while others explain the "how to's" on obtaining CLIs with Discover. For me, I did what the Myfico Forum said to do and it worked.

CLI requests with Discover are always SPs -- if they need to do an HP they will warn you and give you the option.

People are on Discover CL schedules that vary, some get a CLI every month, others every 2, others every 3 and others not at all. I haven't gotten a CLI ever with them.

The rumor is that Discover likes to see LESS usage than MORE but there are contrary data points to this. I use my Discover a LOT -- over 200% of the limit as I make multiple PIF per month. That's only because my Discover is my best rewards card for non-category spend right now. So I use it a lot, and they give me nothing.

After February 2018, I won't use Discover at all but will give it a $10 autopay monthly just for activity. We'll see if that finally convinces them to give me a CLI on a card I will have no use for.

So use your card if it gives you the best cashback, but in order to get a CLI, don't overuse it.

A few data points also came from folks who did a BT to Discover, paid it off in a number of months and then got a CLI after.

Discover does offer auto CLIs as well, but not as common to discuss here.

Yeah, they're bizarre lenders. I wonder what figures into their CL strategy but no one will ever prove it beyond just more data points.

On one of my FB groups, one thing came up -- people who used Discover for Plastiq said they stopped getting CLIs and some who got huge ones never used it for Plastiq. I did use mine once (free transaction based on affiliate shares) to pay a housing contractor, so I wonder if that put me in the naughty chair.

I've had pretty good CLI history with them: $500 -> $1500 (6 months later) -> $3300 (3 months after that) -> $5100 (1 month after that) -> $6100 (1 month after that).

I wouldn't say I go over the top with my spending, but I PIF mostly and sometimes carry a balance (0% APR so nbd; this will change in a few months).

Ok Op, in seriousness, just use your card and make timely payments. The truth is none of us can say how to entice cli because we all get treated differently. At least with Amex there is a method to their madness, set schedules and all. With Discover, usage, profile, geographical location, income, and other assorted goodies only seem to rile them up. Stick with the general feel, 30, 60, 90 days schedule and see where you land

Sums them up quite well.

I seen them go dark on their card with me for over 6-7 months and then restart the 91+ day SP CLI routine.

After a long empty streak they came through with a 500 dollar spot over 3 months ago, i was carrying a 0% BT at the time since paid off and running no balance at all with them since then. The 91+ day cycle rolled around recently and Nada, so it's back to the dark again i guess on this end.

FWIW discover happens to be one of the longest running cards in my profile.

There's just no way of knowing with any certainty with them compared to other lenders so you pretty much have to wait until they do decide to throw a bone your way.

I can definitely second the thin profile criteria. At the time I had only 2 cards reporting on my CRs with CLs totaling a paltry $700. Although I had already applied and was approved for 2 new cards earlier in the week, I pulled the trigger on the Discover pre-approval page and got 2 card offers. I opted for It Miles and got a whopping (for me and my humble profile) $8K SL. I do plan on making it my most favored card but I'm not too interested in CL increasing even by small amounts. It would be nice if there was more transparency though.
