When will every Visa card have contactless?

During the football game yesterday, I saw this ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiGnou1TaAE

They seem to be pushing contactless payments as a faster alternative to EMV. (With that snappy new sound too -- did anybody else read the psychology article on it?)

When will they start forcing issuers to include contactless? How many on here have one or more cards that already support contactless? I'm sure this raises the cost to produce the physical card, and somewhat messes up metal cards where the back layer must now be plastic a la Amex Platinum with contactless.

My CapOne Venture is contactless. I'm in the midwest and there is still a fair amount places that doesn't do chip let alone contactless payment. I don't see issuers having incentive to make a mad push about it until it becomes something that is more widely accepted amongst merchants.

I have a few contactless cards -they are MC.. Atira MC, and 2 BMO MC Cards right off the top of my head. I think I have another as well, but I can’t remember who the issuer is

OP- which new sound for the EMV Cards? I’ve noticed lately that Costco and Publix have both done away with that annoying buzz/beep and replaced it with something a little more pleasant

All three of my Capital One cards are contactless. Two are MasterCards and one's a Visa. CapOne says the encryption is similar to EMV. When I tap or hold the card near the terminal rather than inserting, it seems to be somewhat faster than EMV.

It seems that every terminal that I've encountered that supports contactless cards also supports Apple Pay. I opt for Apple Pay because of the extra security beyond EMV or contactless with the card.

Contactless, or RFID was attempted before (mid 2000's) but American's resist change (metric system anyone?, Bueller?....Bueller?) and many Americans are very paranoid. There was fear that one could walk by a scanner with an RFID contactless card in one's wallet or purse and get charged for something they didn't buy. And because their RFID was read, they would not be able to dispute it....I'm not saying that couldn't happen but come on. Like EMV before it, contactless is growing in the rest of the world including our neighbours to the north and south but like everything else, we are behind.

Just like EMV has not been mandated (or forced) it is unlikely RFID contactless will be forced. One of the biggest problems will be getting merchants to have both EMV and RFID capable POS systems. Most of the ones I've seen are only EMV and swipe capable.

Do you have the metal Venture card that is contactless (the one with the annual fee)?

Or are you referring to the Venture One card?

I believe Capital One has been issuing contactless versions of the QS and Venture One by default since at least April of 2017. I recently got the new version of the QS and it was contactless. I think the Savor is also issued with contactless by default since it came out. Don't know about other cards.

The Citi Costco card also has contactless by default. I don't know if it's just that card or if Citi has contactless versions of other cards as well.

Other than those two, AmEx is probably the farthest along in RFID adoption. They make available contactless versions of a "majority of consumer cards" and also the Blue for Business and Starwood Guest business cards. You just have to call them and request them. I myself recently requested the contactless versions of the ED and BCE. With those two being transparent they actually look pretty cool, with a few extra antennae loops around the top.

Edit: seems that Wells Fargo also issues a lot of contactless cards as well. And according to this (https://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/contactless-tap-and-go-cards-us-market.php), the Venture can also come in contactless version.

The real problem is the stores have to pay for the readers , and they just had to pay for chip readers so when they are ready for replacement we will see more contactless cards.

I think the lack of readers probably isn't as big of an issue. While contactless payment transaction limits are gradually being increased or eliminated in places like the UK, it's possible that initial large scale deployment in the US will still limit them to mostly low-value transactions due to security reasons. That means not every place needs to have contactless capable terminals because many places just don't see lots of transactions under $30 or $50. Many places that do see low-value transactions like McDonald's, Starbucks, and many public transit systems already have the equipment to accept contactless payments. So the adoption strategy may be to target those places first, get people used to using contactless, then in 3-4 years when the current batch of cards is being replaced, the demand for contactless will increase.

I have the regular Venture ($59 annual fee) that isn't metal. When my old card expired I was issued a new one that was contactless.

My Cap1 QS card has the contactless logo on the back. However, I've never seen a demonstration of how contactless payment actually works. The one time I was using it while at a contactless POS I tried waving it around the device but nothing happened, so I just inserted the chip like I always do.

Oh the US definitely won't have contactless acceptance nearly as good as elsewhere. For one thing, we still mostly refuse to adopt pay at the table at restaurants, even at the ones that use EMV. (I suppose you could just follow the server, but I imagine most of the restaurant POSes will just have the contactless part on the reader disabled anyway.)

That said, the terminals that are being installed generally do have the hardware, it's just a matter of enabling it.

Most retailers use the same 3 or 4 readers from Ingenico and Verifone, and those definitely have the hardware. Software is a different story, however.

As someone who has a few contactless cards, the US doesn't have a limit for contactless payment. I also don't think the lack of a limit will be that big of an issue considering that the US mostly doesn't use PIN in the first place.

A lot of places have to push something on the POS to enable the contactless reader. Meanwhile, insert/swipe works whenever. Way to promote the feature, guys.

That said, it should just be a matter of putting the card over the display until the terminal beeps--or over the contactless logo if they use an external reader.
