Approval...Amex Platinum upgrade from green!!

I must be crazy I asked my card to be upgraded from green to platinum and I was approved for the upgrade. They must have wanted the $550. Upgrade cards are sent regular mail and not fedex unless requested. So i'm looking forward to an unboxing next week. After the upgrade I used the check spending ability and a 2k purchase would not be approved but when i rechecked at 1,500 it was approved and I have a $230 balance so my internal exposure limit is around 1700-1800 I believe and i've checked a couple other times a couple months ago. This is with a 30k income so perhaps this is why i'm at this threshold. Seems a little of a bummer for having the platinum card.

Congrats on the Platinum!

Did it come with a bonus offer? IIRC upgrading precludes you from ever getting the Platinum bonus, it appears to put you in the "once in a lifetime" bucket.

I guess for the perks airline lounge access, recognition, etc upgraded elite status at hotels etc, 200 airline credit, 200 Uber credit, can always downgrade if I don’t like it

What’s the minimum starting limit of the platinum card? Is it similar to other premiere cards like CSR that start off with at least 10K?

eclecticdementia1 if my memory serves me they gave me a NPSL and then set the internal limit at $500 to start. As you know this is not a fixed credit limit card so the limit can vary over time.

I think the internal limit varies with each person based on income credit and spending on card. Mine seems to be close to 2k for my income level that is okay for 30k. I’ve had 200-400 balance when I checked spending ability and testing 2k with balance says denied but 1500 will be approved with balance between 200 and 400. I like it for the prestige and benefits it gives especially centurion lounge access

There are other versions of AmEx Plat card that may be bettered suited for you for the perks....

The only ones i'm aware of are the delta skymiles ones and they are credit cards and not a charge card. With amex the charge cards are the green card $95 a year, the gold card $195 a year and the platinum card $550 a year. Then there is the delta skymiles cards which i already have the delta skymiles so that is another $95 a year but the one i have does not include the lounge access. That costs 495 a year so for 550 the platinum cards perks will pay for itself 200 airline credit, 200 uber credit, lounge access to delta crown room and centurion lounges, and the upgraded hotel i figure it's worth the money.

There are other Amex Plat charge cards, e.g Ameriprise

which has the AF waived the first year, and several others (e.g. Mercedes Benz version).
