So I have a questions for anyone who has any experience with capital One quicksilver1 Mastercard version with annual fee. I’ve search through many threads, but like Capital One, most threads dont list if it is MC or Visa. Any insight for the MC version would AWESOME! As I understand, these cards work and operate differently.

Back story - filed BK7 in 8/14. DC in either 10/14 or 11/14. In any event, scores in the dumps low 500’s would be my best guess. In February of 2015, I decided to app for a Capital One card. I accepted the terms with the annual fee. It has grown very little. Started @ 500 and in three years sits @ 2750. Only because I merged another card with it. Honestly, the card did what it needed to and has moved my profile to the next level. I have much better cards now, even a Capital One Venture1 Visa Siggy SL @ 10K.

Every 6 months like clock work, I call in and look online and check if this card qualifies for any offers, even PC to the QS MC without annual fee. The answer ALWAYS the same, “Sorry this card does not have any offers..”
I called in last week as this card is going to cycle another year, which means fee time. Again, same reply has above.. I even mentioned to the rep, that I get love from my others cards like Discover APR reductions, better limits, and even promotional 0% for 12 months (which I got before Christmas so you know what card I used for my holiday shopping lol 5% on Amazon). Anyways the rep gave me the same response. So frustrated, I called back in and escalated to the next level, spoke to a manager here state side and got nowhere with her. Even danced around with closing the card. Her reply is, “we don’t want to lose you, blah blah blah. But your card doesn’t qualify for anything. Here at Capital One, we do offer promotions to our card members blah blah blah...” Finally, I just asked her to be frank with me, “Am I chasing a mythical Unicorn? For nearly three years, I have been “chasing” and yet no signs of these promotional offers, not one.” We laughed a bit more and ended the call on a pleasant note but no love and no unicorn... Thanked her for her time and disconnected.

I don’t use this card enough to pay for the annual fees with the cashback I get from my monthly simplisafe fee @ $15 a month.

Now with all that out there, here’s my question. What the should I do? Does this unicorn exist?!? I have seen many people here get the PC, most people who had success had the Visa version, but I don’t... I have the MC so not so lucky. And I don’t want to take a triple pull for the QS regardless of its a MC or Visa. Here are my only option as I see it.

1. Call back when my fee post to the account and ask to waive it. -
1A. If it gets waived, “chase” the 🦄 for another year. -or -
1B. If no fee is waived, Thank Capital One and close the card like the end of a Chapter in a book.

For some of you that will say combine the accounts into one, that’s not an option and here’s why.
My Venture card is new, 1 month old. To be eligible for this, both accounts have to be 6 months or older, which in my position is a disqualified due to age. And I refuse to pay $39 to get $2750 added to my venture card.

Here’s another question.
If I opt to close this account outside of utilization going up maybe .25%. Yes, I mean a quarter of 1%. like throwing a pebble at a tank. I’m not to worried about that. Is there any adverse effects to closing my oldest TL since BK7?

Any insight would be helpful and Thank you for your time and your reply.

I believe you typically get the Visa version by initially getting approved for the QS in the first place. Most folks have more success upgrading from the Cap1 Platinum to the QS

I also have the QS1 and have been kicking myself for not getting the no annual fee Platinum instead.

Unlike many people here, I've never seen a Visa version of the QS1 or QS.

My initial QS1 was a MC, as was the second QS1 on approval. Eventually, if you use the card HEAVY and make large payments each month, you may get that Upgrade box ticked. Mine eventually did after about two years.

Here's the thing with Capital One. If you were approved for the card, but your credit profile was right on the approval line, there's a good chance that this card is just permanently stuck where it is, even though your profile has gotten better. I couldn't get a CLI on my Playstation Visa ($2k) but I applied for a Venture and got $15K SL.

If the timing for card combination doesn't work for you, I don't think its worth keeping. Yeah, your utilization will take up .5%, big deal. Your AAoA won't be effected for 10 years, and by then, the slight down tick shouldn't matter beacause you'll have a full and healthy aged profile.

Out of curiosity, if you do the prequal, are you prequaled for a regular QS?

Im in the same situation. Ive had my qs1 mc a little over a year. From what i have read, there is little to no hope for us. Kicking myself for not taking the no fee platinum as well. The 1.5% cashback enticed me to choose the qs1. Since then ive gotten better cards and that 1.5 is nothing special. I didnt even have a fico when i was approved so yep im in that bucket. Im not taking 3 HPs to get out either so i feel like i have gotten my use out of them and time to say goodbye in the near future.

Capital One switches its products from Visa to MasterCard and back quite frequently. I believe that new QSes are currently being issued as Visas and that new QS1s are currently being issued as MasterCards.

QS1s are notoriously difficult to product-change (PC). I was able to PC two of them after 12 or 13 consecutive months of usage. I used each card for a charge or two each month, and paid in full each month. I didn't usually use the cards a lot, and I generally paid as soon as I was done with the card for the month rather than letting a statement cut with a positive balance. I can't guarantee that this will work as we don't have a lot of data points on it. But people do PC this card on occasion, and I think it's likely that they've been using the card rather than letting it collect dust.

Whether it's worth absorbing another annual fee to try this is up to you. The bottom line is that QS1s aren't keeper cards. They need to be closed, combined, or PCed sooner or later.

In contrast, Capital One Platinum cards are relatively easy to PC, generally a few months after obtaining them. And if they don't PC, because of the lack of a fee, there's no real harm in keeping them around. Because of this, if people are considering an application for either the Platinum or QS1, I generally recommend the Platinum.

@Dalmus

Yes, a month ago I check and I think I was pre qualified for the QS, Venture and Venture1. I opted to go Venture1 because $95 annual on the Venture card was crazy high, plus I have plenty of Cash Back cards that I like using more. So Venture 1 for me. And I was approved, 10k, plus 12 months 0% and got the small sign up bonus ($200 in travel).😌

Ok. So you state combining cards is not an option due to age. However if you take option 1B as you stated;

1B. If no fee is waived, Thank Capital One and close the card like the end of a Chapter in a book.

Then combining is very much so an option. Because at this point in option 1B you will have already renewed another year. Your fee will not have been waived. And therefore you'll be paying that fee just to close the card which makes no sense to me personally. If you go that route (1B) I suggest you wait it out a few more months and then combine limits. Whats a few more months anyway once you've already paid the AF?

Anyway best of luck to you. Just some food for thought.

@ Roy21 appreciate the comment.
Not entirely true. Once the fee kicks in, you have 30 days to decide to keep the account. If you close the account prior to expiration of the 30 days, Capital One will refund you the cost. The way the manager explained it, the annual fee is for the cash reward program. Since the card is considered a “rebuilder”. We will see on the 25th of February. I will post what transpires of the next few weeks.

By the way, I called again the other day and spoke to another Manager, not the front line reps. He apologized that there was not offers as of yet on the card. I reminded him it’s been almost three years! He apologized and gave my $15 dollars credited to my cash rewards... I was “would you like to give me $39 to pay for my annual fee?” He just laughed and said call back in February and see if he can give me a little more to compensate me. I don’t want compensation, I just want out of the annual fee, a couple of strokes on the keyboard and bam... his keyboard was broken...😶 just kidding... I just have to wait for now.

I was able PC my CapitalOne QuicksilverOne MC into a Quicksilver Visa card by telling them I was willing to close the card immediately. My goal was to kill any annual fee and lower the interest rate (I also had a FICO score of over 740 and other credit cards at much higher limits than my $3,250.00 limit with CapitalOne. I now have no annual fee and a possiblity of a limit increase within 6 months. Fair warning...my experience with CapitalOne (for which I have been a customer for over 6 years) is that they are very stingy with credit limit increases (even though I have other cards at $7,000 and $4,500). I recommend sticking with CapitalOne; I am a big fan, especially since they are a company which believes in giving people a "second chance!"

LOL).

Anyway, I was finally able to get a PC to a Quicksilver a couple of years ago... you can read the minute-by-minute here: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Capital-One-QS1-to-QS-PC-Finally/td-p/4460966

I currently have three Capital One cards; the "old" one mentioned above (that I just made into a Venture One a couple of weeks ago as an experiment); a Quicksilver Visa Signature that I opened three years ago, and a Quicksilver World Elite MasterCard that I opened last year as a Venture WEMC, and just changed to a QS a few weeks back.

As I mentioned above when I use the link in the 'big' thread it takes me to my oldest card, but there's no way to navigate to my other two cards from there. The solution is to login to my account and pull up the screen where I'm looking at a card's transactions; while on this screen add "/productupgrade" to the end of the URL (without quotes, and being careful not to change any of the 'gibberish' already in the URL field) and it will take you to the upgrade options for the card you're looking at.

I previously could never get this to work in Firefox, but it would work in Chrome. I've changed out some of my Firefox add-ons, and now the "trick" is working in Firefox as well. In other words, if you can't get it to work, try another browser before giving up (especially if you use a lot of add-ons like I do).

About the "old" card... it started with a $300 credit line (as Orchard Bank), and with CLIs I've been able to 'nurse' it up to $5900. I only use it for a single recurring charge that's just under $20, and it's one of the few cards I still hit up for a CLI every few months. They usually say 'no' due to lack of use, but back in September I ran around $1.5k through it and they gave me an additional $1k a few weeks later (the new CL $5.9k); whether those two events are connected is up to the viewer to decide, but I tend to think it didn't hurt.

My QS Visa is now at $13k, and my QS WEMC is at $11k, both comfortable limits for my needs. I did try to get a CLI on the QS Visa a few weeks ago, but they denied it. This is generally no surprise in itself, but this time instead of 'lack of use' they complained about my credit score and balances in relation to income. They are looking at the mortgage score for EQ which in my case is both the lowest bureau and the lowest version, at right around 710 (FICO 08 is 770+ for all three). I'll try again in a month or so when my balances are lower and I predict they'll give me another $1k, that seems to be the 'norm' for my relationship with them.

At the time of my initial upgrade from QS1 to QS in 2016 my scores were being held back by two old baddies; if I remember correctly my scores at that time were around 710 (FICO 08).

If I've left anything out or if you have additional questions feel free to ask.
