Amex hard / soft pulls

I have the blue for business amex card about 6 mo and I want to get a few more cards. I can never seem to get a preapprovals on the site. Can you get more cards with a soft pull if you cold app? Or do you have to get a preapproval 1st. Thank you anyone who can chime in!

IME, once your a member, your apps are SP, but only for a decline. Approved apps will show up with a HP in most cases.

You are correct, there have been some that did.. its just a general rule to expect an HP, so that if its only an SP you can be surpirsed.. Hate to tell someone its an SP and then they HP them.

That’s generally when they get another card on the same day or week. Some banks will use a hard pull for up to a month that you already used with them.

As usual YMMV. I also agree with the adage that you should expect a hard pull and be thankful if it’s just a SP.

Recent data points have supported the idea that if you apply while logged in and with a preapproval, it will result in only a soft pull. If you apply without being logged in, it results in a hard pull. Again, AMEX has the autonomy to do what they will with your application as you’ve given them permission to do so by applying.

I received my first approval in April 2017 with a hard pull. I received my second approval in October 2017 with a soft pull. Note, it was within 3 days of the monthly Experian FICO 8 score update.

Again, I can’t state enough YMMV. In the end, the new account will hurt more than the inquiry. Both score dings improve with time.

I have the green charge card and my credit has gone up since applying for it, so I applied for the blue cash card with a preapproval and I was declined. It didn’t trigger any “new inquiry on your account” emails and notifications I have set up, either. I was also logged into my account when I applied.

But I’ve also never been approved while being a member, but I can say that my declines (yes, I tried to get the PRG cardddd, too) have been SP.

How are you checking to see if you are pre-approved? You need to log in to your account, then click on Menu > Cards > Charge & Credit Card Offers. You still will not see if you are pre-approved. Now click on one the cards that show up (its usually three cards), then click on "Apply Now" and if you're pre-approved for that card it will state "Snowman888lv, you are preapproved". Just note that you must click on Apply Now for any card before seeing whether or not you're preapproved.

In my experience my first Amex card was a hard pull of Experian, then the others were soft pulls (I was preapproved before applying). YMMV

That is what i'm hoping for, but will be okay with an HP. BCE has been a goal card since i first started the rebuild even tho i have an amex with all the BCE perks and then some.

Across business and personal accounts, there are data points for both HP and SP. for personal accounts though, it is very rare to see HPs for new personal accounts the past year or so. My last HP from Amex was in 2002 and I added SPG and Delta Platinum last year with no HP. DW got a HP for her first card (ED) in 2016 but did not get a new one for her Delta Gold in October.

Same same here. Got the ED card 3 or 4 months ago and recently got a Delta Gold a few weeks ago with no HP reported.

I think your garden status resets because you received a new LOC. Might have to ask the garden warden UncleB about that one.

Got my first Amex (EveryDay) in Jan 2015 with a HP. My second was the Hilton Honors 2.5 years later (this past June) and approved with a SP. Then added the BlueCash Everyday in December with another SP.

I'm pretty sure that a new account resets your gardening status, even if it was an SP due to the new acct

Congrats on the new card tho, its the one i was hoping to get, but Amex doesnt like me that much yet

Congrats Ric, but yes you are absolutely the owner of a brand new seedling. Any new tradelines (even including AU accounts) resets it.
