Amex gave me an auto CLI on my BCP card at 183 days after last requested CLI (not the card I would have chosen at 181 days), but whatever. Increased it from $6000-$9000.

Not being satisfied with this and knowing they don’t give more than one credit line increase but every six months, I went right to the credit line increase request form anyway (on that same day) and requested one on that same card for three times the original $6000 credit limit, or $18,000. It was instantly approved! So I thought I would try my luck on a different card which was of course denied because of the six-month rule .

I haven’t seen this particular data point on here, so I thought I’d share, although I’m sure it probably exists here somewhere.

The point being is that if American Express gives you a credit line increase automatically, don’t necessarily be satisfied with it unless it is three times your original credit limit (up to $25k); instead, go ahead and request a credit line increase that same day on that card to 3x the limit.

Dude, this is all over the CLI guide. The six month waiting period is only for customer initiated clis. They can give you 10 clis in that time and you can still triple your current limit! 😞😞 I wish you would have checked out the guide, or post the question so we could have told you. You definitely could have left some CL on the table.

Also, it’s not always a IV if and when you hit, go over 25k. All depends on your credit report, history with Amex. There are a lot of people who can get 5k clis at a time to 35 and beyond with out getting the IV.

So the OP here in theory could have requsted and received $27k, since the $3k auto-CLI bumped him up to $9k thus greatly increasing his 3X CLI potential.

And leaving some of a CLI on the table means that you have lost, um, what again? (Just my PSA that CL isn't real money!)

Good point.... I've never gotten one from Amex.
