I stop at $15,000, however, not all CLIs are alike. If the CLI puts me over $15,000, I stop there.

Sometimes, the SL is high enough.

Many folks here have more credit than they will ever use, myself included, but I see some of these folks contuing to ask for and get CLI's. I have a couple of card with limits above 25K and multiple cards with 20-25K limits. I never ask for CLI on a card with a CL of 20K or better. Just curious as to how common it is to ask for CLI's with cards 20K and above credit lines.

At our house the largest we ever asked for was $20K. Based on income and scores we have left a lot on the table. Dw already locks her purse up during the day in the safe at our biz because of credit card limits. I mean do want to put a new car on a credit card? lol I have charged over $10K in one month to 1 card because of storm damage repairs

Where I get hurt is DW cards generally have $15K to 20K limits. My citi DC card only has a $5K limit and it gets used a lot for misc. In a few months I will cli it again. Dw will probably will get the US Bank cash plus card soon and run alteast $500 to $1K amonth on it based on the 5% deals. That has been going on my DC and killing my % utiz.

As with many topics credit-related, responses to this one can vary greatly and be extreme on both ends. You have some people with a single $500 starter card or two that will literally go their entire lives without ever asking for a CLI. Maybe they get an auto-CLI or two along the way, but they're ultra conservative and never ask for a thing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you've got people that will never stop asking for CLIs. They're super aggressive and will request them and take them as often as they are allowed to by the lender. There are a fair share of these people on this forum. Most, like those that have replied thus-far in the thread above, fall somewhere in the middle.

I personally tend to be satisfied or happy with a $10k limit on my cards that I don't use very much, but could in theory see myself using around half that limit at some point. An example here would be my Chase Amazon Prime, which has a $10k limit. Normally I only put a few hundred bucks on it a month, but it could be $1000. Is there a chance I could drop a $5k spend on a piece of electronics or something at some point? Possibly, so $10k works or me. I have several cards that fit this scenario that I'll never seek CLIs on.

On a daily driver, I tend to like a higher limit. I would push my daily driver to $30k and beyond if I could. I currently use a Citi DC and it has a $12,300 limit, far lower than I'd like. My current balance is about $9000 on the card (last reported balance about $2500) so I do tend to spend a good amount on it, but I always PIF. I just don't feel comfortable with a $9000 balance on a $12,300 limit card, even if I know that balance isn't going to ever get reported.

Then I have 2 cards that I just push my limits on for S&Gs. No reason other than some utilization padding and just the fun of seeing what I can get them to. I'm only a couple of years removed from poor credit scores and having only 1 CC with a $3000 limit, so being able to push these 2 cards higher tends to be a mentally satisfying exercise for me. It lets me know that I've come long way from my lowest point, even though it's only been a couple of years and validates the fact that I've done some really good things for my credit with hard work over that period of time.

My original goal was to have a card with a high enough CL so I could buy a new car. LOL (not that I would). My highest is currently NFCU@$25k, and I have a bunch of cards in the $10-15 range as well. I think that $25k is high enough for me, but I'll probably close my other NFCU card and move the CL to CashRewarsa soon, which would make it at least a $32.5k card

I've got 20+ cards, and my limits are already much more than necessary for my income, even if I want/need to carry a balance for a little while.

I'll continue to 'poke' at Capital One and Citi occasionally, but otherwise I don't see myself going for additional CLIs on my other cards. With my modest profile there's no meaningful difference past a certain point, anyway.

My ideal lineup would be all 10k cl , if i made money 20k on a couple would be ideal, as it stands i average about 5k, which to me is still pretty good. I think its ok to ask cli to reach ones goal but ive learned its also best to stop when you are getting evidence that lender isnt comfortable extending more ,iw lwtters of denial with reasons. Its very true the general poulation dorsnt even thnk of requesting cli, i have a coworker who sure doesnt. But again someone like Brutal who really maximizes his card, should shoot for those cli until they are comfortable with that limit.
Depends on the issuer. With very few exceptions I won’t HP for a CLI.

I got pretty high limits from Amex already. I got CLIs on my BCE (including a 3x after the first two months) which I’ve mainly used to redistribute among my other cards to get them all around $20k each which I feel like is good enough.

With BoA I got CLIs last time I HPd and got denied for the Premium card. They are at $12k each now. I might ask for CLIs again if I try for the app again (maybe go for $20k) but I won’t HP just for a CLI.

My Barclay limits are not quite where I’d like them to be but I won’t HP for it.

I asked for one from Cap1 on my $10k QS and they denied it so I think I’m just gonna leave that one where it is.

My Chase limits were pretty high when I got them so I’m leaving them alone. They don’t get big charges anyway.

My Citi cards are at $8k and $10k. I use them a lot and I can’t wait to SP CLI them again. I might stop if I ever get them to $20k or so.

I got a HP CLI on my Synovus Card because it was at $1k and I wanted to be able to use it regularly without worrying about util. They raised me to $9k and I’m happy with that.

I don't ask for CLIs if they're a HP, unless I really want to increase the limit on that particular card for a reason.
For my daily driver, I'd like it to be at under 15-20% utilization when statement cuts in case I can't pay down before that happens. That was the case with my Venture at $33k CL and charging anywhere from 2k to 5k monthly, and PIF.
Now that I just got the US Bank Altitude with a low limit of $5k, the plan is to use it, pay down and repeat till I qualify for a CLI. I'll use it heavily in hopes that they'll accelerate my CLI.
For any other card, if I'm at or over $10k, it becomes a non-priority to get more credit because I don't really need it and I don't like wasting CLs.

@Anonymouswrote:

You rang?

I stop asking when they stop giving, or if it's a HP and I know it wouldn't be worth it (example: PenFed where I have two cards with $49k in limits; since they now cap overall credit card exposure at $50k it's not worth it). Your later daily driver comment (I went a little too snip crazy on the quote) is perfectly on-point, and is why I am aggressively trying to get my Starwood card into the stratosphere. With $6-8k of average monthly spend on that card alone, the $21k credit line doesn't cut it when it comes to keeping utilization under control since I don't pay mid-statement.

At this point I have personally stopped asking for CLI's. I am content with the limits I have, which total well above my yearly income. I have noticed since I stopped asking, I've been getting quite a few auto increases, which is something that never occurred previously. I am beginning to think that is not a coincidence....

$30k seems to be the place to stop with Cap One so I stopped on all three of my 20k+ cards.

Everything else I am still trying on every 6 months or so.
