AMEX “no payment required at this time.”

I want to pay my Amex charges early but it won’t let me. When I hit the make payment button I keep getting that error message. Anything I can do?

If it states that, then you don't have to pay. You could still pay if you want even when it states that.

Have the charges been completed, or are they still pending? AFAIK Amex won't let you pay more than the current balance on a card.

Your card is likely less than a month old, and you've most likely already made a payment. You are not allowed to pull more than one payment, per card account from any bank until after 30 days from account opening.

You may use your bank's bill pay service or send a check through the mail if you wish to make additional payments.

Kind of comical though. Trying to force a payment when it says "nothing due at this time", then kindly asks "can I help" as a rejection.

Open a chat and they can apply a payment in these situations.

This is exactly right. Happened to me last year and again with my new card when I tried to make a second payment. I hate it though cause I like to make payments weekly.

This is exactly right. Happened to me last year and again with my new card when I tried to make a second payment. I hate it though cause I like to make payments weekly.

It's not the card account, the restriction is on the payment account. Same 30 day restriction will apply if you add and use a new payment account today regardless how old the card account is.

It’s because you just recently added the bank account. They allow one payment once you add a bank account. After 30 days you will be able to make payments as frequently as you like. You can call this number 18002301284 and they can process a payment for you. I just went through this process yesterday.

I paid toward pending charges once. If I remember correctly, you fill in the number under "other."

It's the age of the payment account that matters, not the card. If the payment account has been added during the past 30 days, payments will be restricted. Before the first statement cuts, you'll be able to make one payment. After the statement cuts, you'll be able to make as many payments as you need to pay off your statement balance. And I believe you're allowed one payment beyond that.

If you've gotten your new card and set up your payment account right away, restrictions will be lifted well before the first due date. If you get a second card, you're good to go. If you add a new payment account, the new account will once again have the 30-day restrictions. But your initial payment account will remain unrestricted.

Definitely this. I had a -$400 balance due last week because I paid pending changes before they posted.

I had the same problem, it was because my card/account were new. After I made the first payment didn’t have anymore problems making multiple payments

No it's not, it only seems that way because Amex adds external accounts to individual cards, not to your profile. In other words, linking a new card to your profile does not automatically link existing external accounts already linked to other cards to the new "card account", you still have to link the existing external accounts to the new "card account" therefore triggering the 30 day limitation to the new card account.

That said, you can circumvent this by calling in or chat online and ask them to "copy" the existing external payment accounts over to the new card account, you can then use them without limitations even though the card is brand new. If you add it on your own online, Amex will always treat the external account as a new external account to the new card and apply the 30 day limitation, making it seem like the limitation is on the new card.

Edit: For those with their first ever Amex card who has multiple bank accounts, another way to bypass this is to add multiple payment accounts, this will give you one payment per added external account for that first 30 days if you must make multiple payments. Of course the fact that new Amex card accounts don't report until the 2nd statement renders making multiple payments during the first cycle pointless.

For most people, that would be the case. The exception would be for those trying to meet the sign-up bonus on a low limit.

As everyone stated, after 30 days, you can make as many payments as you want. With my recent new Amex, I had this issue though I found out that I could make multiple payments but only in a 7-day period. Though after the first month, I was allowed to pay whenever I want, if there was a balance of course.
