AMEX - closing card through chat

Hi everybody,

I've just closed my AMEX Blue Cash Preferred through chat not even chatting with a live person. The whole process was like 30 sec.

Open the chat and type "Close account" and the virtual assistant give you the option to choose the card from a list (if you have more than one), click on the card you want to close and it will show you the "Cancel Agreement", click YES and that's it.

I did it in the past chatting with a live person, but was more like 5 min, asking questions why do you want to close it, are you sure, are you really sure....

Virtual assistant don't ask any questions and is fast. Good job AMEX.

OP thanks for sharing. If one is certain the card should be closed, this is a good tool. AMEX probably made it available because an open card that is not used has a certain overhead cost to maintain. They avoid that future cost, since it has no likely revenue.

Others here will often call in in the hopes of getting a retention offer, though that comes with the AF, so only really makes sense if the basic card benefits are unique.

Do you still have other AMEX available?
Did you consider downgrading to Blue Cash, or it just wasn’t even of interest?

I have Blue Cash and don't want to pay the AF for the Preferred. Even the Blue Cash I don't use it that much, but is one of my oldest cards (since 2006) and don't want to close it yet and it has a 25K limit.

That's an awesome limit! If you have Amex cards you use more often then transfer the limit over

The Preferred that I've just closed had 20K limit, I don't really care about that since all my cards have high limits.

I want to apply for the new AMEX Cash Magnet and don't want to keep a card open (with AF) if I don't use it at all.

You could've PC'd your BCP to the Magnet and preserved the account and limit. Only took me a few minutes through chat.

@GardenPro - Did you got the promo also? I don't want to PC'd if I don't get the promo offer.

I prefer to apply again to get the promo offer. I don't have any inquires for 12 mo and all 3 scores are over 810, so will be no problem to get that card.

No promo but I didn't need both the Magnet and BC. I also didn't want to lower my AAOA. With those stats, you definitely don't have anything to worry about.

OP how many AMEX revolvers and charge cards do you have?
I get the reasons for closing the BCP with the $20k limit. It saves the AF and leaves CL space to get another card. AMEX CLI are fairly easy to get for the right profile.

What is the rest of your card list?

Doesn’t always work without extra effort.

DW tried to close her PRG and they made her call in and get brow beat about it for awhile before closing it

Lol bingo... Depends on the card.. I closed my simplycash very easily, but when it came to business green they wanted to know 101 reasons why and was transferred to what I think the RAT team was and had to answer tons of questions, but got by them and still eligable for sign-up bonuses thank gosh, but that was a grilling I got everything from why to what type of business I have and why i originally applied for card and what cards I plan on using now, etc., etc..

This time I had only two (Blue Cash - 25K and Blue Cash Preferred - $20K), but two years ago I had 5 AMEX cards (3 CC and 2 charge cards).

Other cards are about 12 with about 250K+ limits (the highest limit Discover It with 29K). I had also a Master Card from First Tech CU with 35K, but had AF and I've close it last year. Still have a current mortgage (since 2009) + 4 closed car loans (still shows up) and 1 car loan current.
