Are you talking about adding your Disco card as a payment method via PayPal?

It will just show up as a charge, mine say "Paypal, vendor" as regular charges.

When I sent money to another person this way it showed up as a regular transaction and not a cash advance. I've done so with both a Discover and Chase Visa.

A friend of mine, sent money to someone through Paypal and used their linked credit card, and it posted as a cash advance. Venmo or Plastiq however, treats them as a regular CC transaction.

Can't comment on Disco but for my BoA Cash Rewards it always showed up as a purchase, regardless of whether the money was sent as a gift or for goods/services.

So far Discover has considered my paypal transfers as transactions not CAs... pretty good about that..

Does anyone know if it still works that way? I need to send a few thousand to my mother and I’m still in the 0% timeframe and would like to use my Discover card to make this happen. Has anyone done it recently? I really don’t want to get hit with the CA fees.

You could always set your CA line to 0, so either the transaction goes through and gets coded as a "purchase", or it gets declined.

Just be aware that Paypal charges a 2.8% transaction fee for using a credit card to send money.

Just spoke with Discover, and they said once they adjust my CA to $0, they will not be able to readjust it back to my original CA.

I even asked about PayPal sending monies to friends and family utilizing my card, and they said it’s up to how PayPal submits the friends and families transfers. They basically suggested reaching out to PayPal for more “accurate information”.

However on the PayPal site it states it’s up to the credit card institution on how they charge it. So confused here.

Wow, you bring up a really good point. I feel kinda silly now that you bring it up.

There isn’t any GOOD reason to even have a CA for me that I can think of. The lady on the phone made it feel like I was getting stripped of some of my benefits. Haha thank you for shinning some light for me!!

Haha I hear ya, when I called in to kill my CA line, the CSR said in a very omnious voice "sir the CA line s a fixed percentage of your CL, and if we set it to 0, it'll always remain at 0, do you understand that?"

All the time I was thinking "that actually sounds like a good thing" lol

Good point Arksne. As pretty as the CA looks , it's the absolutely most ridiculous feature on a cc offered. Offer it and let people use it , with complete understanding of fees and etc but having us use it and frown on it is what irks me. So zero, coke or sprite

I can see both sides... for many of us, we have plenty of options even for emergencies so there would never be a reason in a thousand years to use Discover for a cash advance.

That being said, I can see how if someone only had a couple of cards, made the decision in haste to have the limit permanently changed to zero then later had an emergency it could be a very uncomfortable call with customer service had they not gone out of their way to make it crystal-clear that the change couldn't be rolled back.

I guess I just can't fathom any scenario outside of some less than kosher ones and maybe paying for certain uhhh, not entirely legitimate services where one would have to tap into the CA line istead of putting the charge on the card itself.
