Rumor] SPG Luxury Launch Bonus Will Be 125,000 Points.

American Express will be launching the SPG luxury card soon (not sure if it’s still launching on August 1st, or if that will be the 18th now) We’ve speculated on what the bonus on that card will be but we’ve now received word from a reliable source that it will be 125,000 points when launched and that will be a limited time offer. The sign up bonus on the lesser SPG cards will be 75,000 points.

It’s also worth remembering that it’s rumored American Express will be adding new restrictive anti churning language to this luxury card as well. I’m 90% confident that these rumors are accurate (I just like to get these percentages so readers have some idea how reliable each rumor is)

I'm more interested in what the upgrade offer will be. Not really interested in apping for a new card simply for the signup bonus.

Amex has stated that the card will launch on August 1st, with existing SPG cardholders eligible to upgrade on August 9th. Since the card launch is not dependent upon the final combination of the reward programs, there's not really any reason why Amex would need to postpone the dates to happen after the merging of the IT systems; it didn't hold Chase back from launching their new card in April.

125k is a great bonus, depending on how much the required spend is and whether someone would have been spending it on the SPG Luxury anyway. I've been offered the 180k on the older Marriott card a few times, but 5/24 got in the way and the spend required to do that was a lot for that card. A new app for SPG Luxury isn't in the cards (no pun intended) for me; I'm getting closer to that $75k spend that will carry over from the current SPG and a new card would cause a total reset of that.

Do you have to hold the SPG card at least a year in order to be elgible for the upgrade?

I got the card in March so I was curious if I would have to wait till next year to upgrade.

I’m looking to possibly getting a premium card without having to open up any new accounts. My AAOA have taken a major hit this year lol

The CARD Act would prevent you from moving up to a higher AF card until your anniversary. DW and I have the same problem with upgrading to Delta Reserve for a few more months (but waiting until January for the MQM boost to count for 2020 status).

Don't really see what makes this a luxury card. 450 dollar fee and you get 300 dollar Marriott credit. So 150 dollar fee card that will earn less points than my Marriott Business. I need around 70k more points to pay for my booked 6 night stay at Ritz Carlton in Aruba next year. The 75k points can be had by the SPG 75k business sign up bonus hopefully.

Definitely more of a niche card than it was before when people would be able to use it as a daily driver. Now if you're not chasing Platinum status I don't see someone getting this card unless they were getting it for the SUB in the first year.

I'll waiting for this 75,000 regular SPG card. I can not afford to pay $450 AF for SPG Luxury card. I have Platinum already.

I don't really value priority pass. I like the centurion lounges but priority pass lounges I have been to have been nothing special. Rather just eat at airport restaurant. Everyone has global entry.

Do you think the $300 statement credit can be applied to the cost of room reservations? I've copied the terms from the webstie below.

I have the regular SPG card currently, with a $99 AF, so I feel like if the $300 can be applied towards stays than it essentially makes the card only $50 a year more expensive. If that's the case, I think it would be worth the upgrade, unless I am missing something.

From the terms:

$300 SPG/Marriott Rewards Statement Credit
During each year of your Card Membership (“reward year”), you are eligible to receive up to $300 total in statement credits on your Card Account for eligible purchases made directly at participating SPG or Marriott Rewards hotels on your Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Luxury Card during that reward year. Your first reward year begins on your account opening date. Each subsequent reward year begins on the anniversary of your account opening date.
Eligible SPG or Marriott Rewards property purchases must be made directly with the participating SPG or Marriott Rewards property and charged to your Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Luxury Card account for the benefit to apply. Incidental charges (including charges made at restaurants, spas and other establishments within the hotel property) must be charged to your room and paid for with your Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Luxury Card at checkout in order to be recognized as SPG or Marriott Rewards purchases.

I don't mind rules that prevent companies from on their own increasing your AF, but not sure why the government should be able to tell us that we are not allowed to upgrade if we decide its in our personal best interest. This rule has flustered me in the past.

For a $450 card the gold status is a total joke under the new program.

I'm not sure but by reading that it seems like it should be able to be applied to the cost of your room and incidentals charged to your room.

It's amusing how the 75,000 sounds so generous, but is actually the same as the "not the best time to apply, wait for 35k" standard 25k SPG bonus has been since they began to allow SPG:Marriott points transfers. If you spend $300 or more a year at Marriott properties and use the annual 50k free night certificate, the annual fee should already be less than zero.

Not everyone has Global Entry, or even TSA PreCheck. I've really enjoyed walking right past the long security lines or immigration lines. Will I use the GE credit on this card? Probably not. I have several other cards that pay for it (and my family of 4), we're not up for renewal for a while, and we may actually just end up paying for NEXUS out-of-pocket since we do enough trips to Canada to make that worthwhile. It would be really nice if these cards all covered NEXUS and SENTRY in addition to GE and/or TSA PreCheck.

As for eating in airport restaurants, you're in luck! Since Chase has completely flooded the PP lounges with their entirely-too-generous unlimited guest policy, PP has been rolling out dining and drink credits for PP holders in terminal restaurants across the country.
