How long is Chase Bank's memory?!?

In 2009, in the aftermath of the recession, I burned Chase Bank by defaulting on a Washington Mutual credit card. The amount was less than $800, passed the SOL and dropped off my credit report. In 2020 I am going to want to apply for my first 5/24 Chase CC.

I am curious as to what kind of reception I am going to get. Does Chase Bank have a long internal memory? I am going to garden until 2020 and it would not be an unexpected disappointment if I get denied because of my irresponsibility ten years ago. I don't even know how to find out what I would owe them if I decided to pay the outstanding debt.

I do have two CA stalking my CR through soft pulls. I wonder if one of these CAs are looking to collect on trash debt sold to them by Chase.

I burned Chase for a cool $13,212 on a Visa they inherited from WaMu in my 2014 BK. No way in heck am I going to get a Chase-branded card until at least the BK and the closed card fall off my reports in 2024; co-branded cards like the Amazon Prime are a possibility, but I'd have to jump through too many hoops, from what I hear, to be worth it. Even after 2024 I'm not sure Chase would be exactly welcoming. If only they had a card like Amex's Optima...

OP, as mentioned by others, they tend to have a super long memory.

That being said, there have been success stories with folks being able to get back with Chase (typically via reconsideration), whether the previous debt was satisfied or not. Of course, the outcome will depend on a number of factors so your experience may vary.

The data points with this are all over the place, and some have better luck than others. I'm one of the luckier ones.

I also burned Chase via Wamu, and I applied for the IHG Mastercard in 2016 to see if I was on the naughty list. Arguably not the best reason to apply for a card, but I digress...

Unsuprisingly it went to review, but a couple of days later I was approved for $9k at the lowest APR. I didn't recon - I just let the process play out.

A few months later when the Chase Amazon Visa was revamped I applied for it, and it was instantly approved by the automation, but only for $500. I chuckled that I would have been better off had it gone to review, since others with weaker profiles were getting larger credit lines. I don't know if my Wamu past impacted the credit line or not.

I can add that even with semi-heavy use, I never got an auto-CLI from Chase; eventually I did a reallocation from the seldom-used IHG to make the Amazon more usable. I've also never requested a CLI, since it's a HP and they are notorious for being stingy.

Anyway, hope this helps.

I have no one to blame but myself. If I can get a Chase 5/24 card when I immerge from the garden that will be great. If I can't, I understand. I take responsibility for my actions and accept the consequences.

10 years from previous default is typically the time that they will no longer outright deny. You will never be auto approved with them and all apps will go pending or be denied for whatever reason.

I believe YMMV, we included chase in our bk7 2005, still denied to this day with reason always listed as "previous history". So 13 years and counting 😯
