Requested VISA got unwanted MasterCard. Removing unauthorized credit inquiry and card?

I have applied for Capital One® No Hassle MilesSM Rewards Visa on the phone and I have emphasized that I am only interested in VISA and not MasterCard. I have been approved while on the phone as I was told for VISA. 10 days later I receive Capital One® No Hassle MilesSM Rewards MasterCard. I call Customer Service and talk with manager and she says that I would have to re-apply fro VISA and manager confirms that another credit inquiry would be issued. I cancel the card immediately, but ...

Here's the question:

What are my options to wipe out the card and credit inquiry from the credit reports? I have not authorized inquiry for MasterCard nor I wanted MasterCard in the first place.

Perhaps card should be called Capital One Extra Hassle Card.

I would dispute the whole thing...it sounds to me like the Old Bait & Switch tactic, lie to you just to get you to apply, then just push through what they want to give you. Contact the CRA and dispute the inquiry and the account as fraud. Because that's what it was. To bad you don't have them taped....or do you.

You can certainly try, but I'm not optimistic. An inquiry is a record of your applying for credit. You would have gotten one if you had been completely denied.

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with a Mastercard? I have both, and I can't tell an iota of difference between the two, other than MC has slightly better extra offers.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH MASTERCARD? I'll answer it for him, That's not what he applied for when a person apply's for somethin, they should get that very thing......NOT SOMETHING ELSE.

Disputing a genuinely-earned inq, especially one that has a corresponding tradeline reporting, is a good way to get nailed with a Fraud Alert on your file, among other very nasty consequences, so I do NOT recommend that.

OP, have you tried any of the Cap1 Backdoor Numbers (link in my signature)? You might have better luck getting switched to the Visa that way, though I can't guarantee you could get it without another inq.

In your shoes, I'd try some of the backdoor numbers and see if you can get it fixed through them. Best approach is that of asking them nicely to help you fix this mix-up, FWIW - bees with honey, and all that. Do let them know there was a mistake made, but put on a please-can-you-help-me tone, not a you-jerks-messed-up tone.

Good luck. Oh, and the motto of using the BD numbers is if at first you don't succeed, hang up and try again. Sometimes it takes several tries to get the right person who can and will help you.

I do understand that.

I was asking for a broader reason, why the preference for Visa over MC? I never said there was anything wrong or unjustified about it; I'm merely curious about the preference.

That's true about the fraud alert, but guess by by law if they place it in there. They have to tell you, and it you want it removeed then it's done. Bottom line. Nothing is final...I've disputed legitimate inquiries and my credit history is fine, scores are fine.

Their are regulations in place....YOU. Just don't use the card, don't activate the card when it arrives.

It still goes on your credit report. After the regulations are in force, you'll be able to decline so that it doesn't report.

Ohhhhh You would think i would know that. But I never received a card that i didn't want. I guess in that case your screwed. Just keep the line on their and just deal with it till they get some real teeth in these regulations. They will....that being congress, WILL pass and make law regulation to reign these Credit Card company's in on their practices. Like issuing $200 lines of credit with $90 annual fees calling it a Platinum card, jacking up rates for no reason, and charging late fees as well when non were warranted. I think it's high time that they reign these #astards in.

To all those poster's who think more regulations by our illustrious Congress will make the situation better are living in a dream world. More meddling will further screw up the system and will have the effect of squelching credit for those on the lower end and raising cost of credit for everyone else. In other words, this legislation will hurt those who have been helped the most over the last few years by relaxed credit issuance. More legislation is not what is needed. In the end we have to be responsible for the wise use of credit. That takes education and personal responsibility. Those that want to have more laws do this work for us will come to regret it.

It's that type of additude right there is the reason these banks have run away. They took all the regulations off the banks when they repealed The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 in the late 90's. I'm all about personal responsiblity, but if a recall things were very good during the early 90's plenty of money plenty of jobs, plenty of credit. Guess what they took away Glass-Steagall and the banks started taking over. Guess what...buddy it's time this chains got put back on. They may not resolve everything. BUT SOMETHING IS BETTER THEN NOTHING AT ALL. Something needs to be done at the banking practices in this country. PERIOD

And? If you're in the low 6's you shouldn't have any problems getting a secured card.

One thing you might try is calling their corporate HQ-- don't bother with asking a CSR for the phone number. Google their SEC filing and get it from there. Ask for media relations. Kindly & calmly explain the situation to the Media Relations Rep, and explain that you have no idea where to direct your concerns to, because the CSRs were unable or unwilling to address your concerns. The Media Relations person will transfer you to the "Executive Customer Service" -- above the call centers. They have the power to help you. You'll have to convince them to do just that.

Kudos Watchman....Just look at where just talking about regulation has gotten us! More talk of rate-jacking than I've ever seen on this board. Can't wait to see what happens since Pres. spoke today on credit card reg. They need to leave it alone already! Their micro-meddling can only makes things worse.

OP, I would love to hear if you do manage to get this matter corrected. I'm with Hauling though, I can't tell the difference in the cards.
