Pre Approved for Amex Platinum but no welcome offer

I saw I was pre approved for the platinum card but said no welcome offer. The annual fee is steep but the credits pay for it. I wonder if it would change later on but sense I have already 4 cards with them it might stay the same. Has this anybody else’s been denied the welcome offer?

Sorry just clarifying; Are you saying that you were logged into your Amex account as a current Amex member, and were able to see a pre-approval with your name on it? Specifically, it would state "YourNameHere, you are pre-approved!" If so, I'd say you're good to go most likely.

When I wasn’t an AMEX customer, when I went to the pre-approval page it would tell me the cards I was pre-qualified for didn’t have any welcome offers or intro rates (if I applied through THAT link). All I did was make sure I was preapproved for a certain card and then applied on the page where there was an offer.

No offer?

Just get the Ameriprise Version. No bonus offer but waived AF for the first yr.

I just got it couple of months ago.

If you have had the personal platinum before you wouldn’t be eligible for another welcome offer per the once in a lifetime Amex offer rule.

If you have never had the platinum before
And If you have opened or closed a bunch of Amex cards semi recently. It can also disqualify you for welcome offers. This is a new rule though and only prompts you during the actual application.

I’ve never heard of being preapproved for a charge card that they have never had before and not receiving a welcome offer.

I know this is done with certain revolvers where they place you in Amex’s “credit steps” and remove the welcome offer.
But it’s only been revolvers in the past.

If you have never had the personal platinum before and it’s truly showing no welcome offer. I would go for the Ameriprise version as it’s free the first year until you qualify for the personal platinum sub. The SUB for the platinum is extremely valuable and it would be foolish not to wait until you would qualify for it

If it were me, I would shop websites until I found a link that gives me at least the 60,000 MR offer. And if not in a rush, wait a few weeks to see if a 100,000 MR offer appears somewhere.

Said differently, I would not app or upgrade to the Platinum without some sort of bonus.

Agreed. I would not upgrade without getting some sort of bonus. A Good question however as I am in the same position as you. I have the Amerprise version with the AF waived for the first year. I got no signup bonus. I never prev had the Plat card. Am I still eligible for the Plat card bonus if I was to apply prior to my Amerprise AF coming due. I am thinking about doing that but would like the input.

Under the lifetime rule, you are eligible for a welcome offer on any card that you have never had. The Ameriprise, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, etc. versions are considered different card products than the plain vanilla personal Amex Platinum. Of course, there is the new language from Amex that you may or may not be eligible for SUBs determined by how many cards you have opened and/or closed. But that would likely be across the board and not particular to any specific card type.

Thanks for the replies.

No I have never had the platinum card before. I am a current member with Amex as I have the PRG , SPG , Delta Gold and Blue Cash Everyday. I saw pre approved on the website when I clicked apply so I clicked applied and I got pop up stating that I could not get the welcome offer for numerous reasons.( how many accounts I have opened or closed with Amex)think this is the new welcome restrictions Amex started this summer where a welcome offer is not gaurranteed when you apply. I cancelled the application to think about it and decided the perks pay for AF itself so I tried to apply and I don’t see the card at all on the website when I login which is werid.

I called customer service to see if I was still pre approved for the card and the representive didn’t sound to assuring. She said your approved to apply for the application. I stated being an Amex customer with 4 cards and one HP (thanks to you guys and all the great info I get from here) I need to know if I’m preapproved before I apply cause I know that will be a soft pull and a good chance to get approved. But she just sounded eager to submit the application so I declined. I will call back later.

It always amazes me how selective Amex is with bonuses.

I’ve opened 5 Amex cards all within the past year and 3 within the past 3 months. Never gotten a bonus restriction message for any of them. I always signup with the best offers as well.

Zeus, if I were in your shoes and wanted a platinum I would choose the Ameriprise version or another cobranded platinum. You would get the card for free the first year if you went with the Ameriprise as that’s basically the SUB.
This way you get the benefits of the platinum card right away and you leave the vanilla platinum SUB open as even if you never get the SUB but get the card you can never get the SUB.

The 100K offer on the Plainum is worth 2 grand. And that’s a pretty reasonable value for MR points. If you really try hard to max out the value it could easily be 4-5 grand

Even the standard 60K offer is worth $1200

100k MR points worth $4-5K, now that's pushing it a bit. With all the ff devals this year & last.
150K points for business class ticket worth $3.5k-5.5k is probably the best you can do these days.

I’ve been reading up on Flyertalk and I’ve seen some crazy redemptions in order to get 4-5 cents per mile. Some people were getting higher then that! The routing is completely crazy though.

But as I said , a much more reasonable value is around 2 CPP

@Shadowfactor I was thinking about going that route, as i'd like to wait for the 100k offer, but don't have it yet. So the Ameriprise Platinum doesnt affect the welcome bonus on vanilla Platinum? can you have both or would i need to cancel the Ameriprise first?

I believe you can have both at the same time. Not sure why you would want to unless it was maybe a month or two overlap if you did find the 100K offer.

Try cardmatch and also try directly through Amex Prequalified. My fiancé has it if you go to Amex’s website.

So i'm in an interesting situation. I've been pre-app on the Amex site for months, but its more for my history with amex i think, as my scores are still low enough that card match and the likes won't show me amex offers. Tried incognito and got the 50k PRG offer, but Plat was still at 60k.

I would only keep it till i got the 100k offer or the AF came due.

Try incognito with a slight misspelling of your name. I’ve read on FT that works for some people and doesn’t affect the approval.

Awesome, thanks. i'll give that a shot. i just didnt want to get approved on a "shady" method and they kill my welcome bonus.
