I’ve had two cap one accts and have paid flawlessly for over a year. Recently, I had the funds to pay up my balance in full. I went online and did so the way I always do. Two days later I get a notification that the payment was rejected. I inquired and they told me it was returned by my bank. The bank it showed having returned it was my OLD bank. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when I switched banks, I removed that acct from my cap one profile. I then made the payment AGAIN and it cleared using my current bank acct. My cap one accts both showed paid in full and all was right with the world.

Tonight, I happened to click on my cap one app to see that both accts have been closed for a returned payment even tho they were paid in full. I’m 1000% positive that I did not use that old acct to submit the initial payments because it has been off my cap one profile for a YEAR! Now they tell me I have to get a letter from my old bank stating that the account is closed and fax it to cap one, etc. The letter is supposed to state that there was an unauthorized debit to the acct. YES CAPITAL ONE, YOU DID IT!!! Plus, I don’t have a confirmation that I removed that acct from my profile because they never provided one! I’m highly upset now and I need to know if I have any recourse.

HELP!!!!!!

UPDATE 9/6 - Well, it would appear that hard work and perseverance paid off. I had to send a whole packet of information, including a letter from my old bank, statements etc. and capital one is going to reopen my accounts. I’m told it would take 30 days from the day the investigation closed which was 9/4. They said it was fairly obvious that the payment to the wrong bank account was a mistake, whether it was mine or theirs. At this point I’m just happy that my account will be reopened and hopefully my credit is not affected too much. Thanks all for the valuable input!!!!

If that falls through, try give their Executive Office a call and see if will they help you out.

I had a similar frustrating experience recently, a month ago. Capital One defaulted to using my old bank account without sufficient balance. Long story short, my old bank charged me for return fee. The moment I saw it, I tried to pay my Cap1 balance with the correct bank account but would not allow me to, because I had just "paid" it (but I know it would soon return the balance). I ended up swallowing the fee.

What pissed me was that I was applying for CLI. And guess what, the reason for my rejection was that I had a "payment recently returned". I tried asking for recon twice, a month apart, no luck. I ended up sock drawering my Cap1 and using a more generous credit card.

(what's more,interesting.., my "new" bank account was actually a Cap1 360 account. It shows my checking and savings account side-by-side with my credit card account. Go figure.)

Don't mean to steal your thread... Does cap 1 reject CLI for all accounts when you have a returned payment or is it just for the account that had the returned payment? I also recently used the wrong account to pay my bill and when I realized what I did I litterally cried because I knew I f'd up bad.

When you click on the silhouette -> Settings, do you see the old account listed under "External Accounts"? If so, it was never deleted.

I just logged in to double check my own settings after reading this thread as I have switched to a different payment account 5 months ago without deleting the old account thinking I might change back later on, what I discovered is that even though autopay is pointing to the new payment account, Cap One will default back to the old account when you try to make a manual payment, I have not made a manual payment since the payment account change so I never noticed this until I tried it just now, I can definitely see myself assuming all payments would point to the new payment account and hit submit without paying close attention, I suspect this might be what happened to both of you if the old account was never deleted.

I just deleted mine to avoid future problems, I actually had 3 accounts listed.

Sorry this happened. Remember everything is computer driven. And they can mess up at times as we know. Imagine the size of transactions pumping thru the servers 24/7. As OldMan said above me in a way. Each card has its own account on it. 2 separate accounts. I have 3 blocks on my main page. No where on that page is account info. Maybe the 1 card still had the old account and thats why it happened. You may have deleted it on 1 card and didnt on the other.

When I opened my 2nd Discover and my webpage populated and showed the 2 accounts. I had a payment returned. The computer changed my routing number on my 18 month old card and then changed my acct. number on the new card. I left it alone and called so I had proof the computer malfunctioned and the CSR watched on her end the changes I made.

Sucky problem no doubt OP. As suggested, I would send them the info they're requesting and hope for the best. It doesn't help the situation now, but this is an example of why I suggest pushing payments from a bank account rather than pulling. Pushing eliminates these types of errors. And withpushing, I also suggest setting up a payment earlier than the due date on the initial (just in case you fat finger the account number) because it gives you time to correct it before the actual due date.

Best of luck to you OP and I hope it works out in your favor.

OP - it sucks when situations like this happen. It can happen if you have multiple accounts as I almost had the same thing happen but since I login and check my accounts like a hawk daily, it was a quick fix. I agree that pushing a payment will resolve this but what's the point of having auto-pay then? I'm with the oldman87 on this, checking the auto-pay and making sure it pulls from the right account is necessary. I check all of my accounts daily and especially when a payment is due.

I can’t imagine a credit card issuer closing an account due to a single returned payment from an old bank account, did you previously have returned payments on that same account? If so maybe they have some type of policy to close an account once there has been X amount of returned payments. Good luck!

Well, you’ll have to imagine it then because that’s exactly what happened. My history with Capital One was impeccable. That’s why I’m so upset about this.
