topic AF when reacquiring PRG? in Credit Cards

As most of you have undoubtedly seen in other threads and elsewhere, Amex is likely refreshing the PRG with some awesome benefits. The question I have is whether anyone knows if you have to pay the annual fee on the PRG for the first year if you've already had it before and you're apping for a new one. I know the sign-up bonus is once per lifetime, but when I look at the disclosure information for the PRG on the Amex website, it states that the annual fee is $0 for the first year, and I don't see an asterisk next to it indicating that this is part of the once-per-lifetime sign-up bonus. Anyone have any experience with this?

If you're applying for a new card, then it's an entirely new account and you'll have a free first year. If you're reinstating an old closed PRG account (unlikely) then you'd be charged the AF. But yes as you said you won't be able to get a signup bonus even on a new account.

5 years was most likely before Amex Once in a Life time Rule was put into effect.

Although targeted mailers can get you around the welcome offer restriction I think. It was discussed when I was a newer forum member but I have heard anything about one in quite a while. They aren’t very common and most have specific language to that effect which is different then most mailers.

To answer the OPs question. It would depend on what the exact terms that were when you received the no welcome offer popup. Some AF waivers are considered part of the welcome offer. I believe it lays out all of this during the popup message.

I’ve never gotten the popup message so I’m not 100% sure but based on what I’ve read here and the couple screen shots I’ve seen. It should all be laid out pretty clearly during that message.

As far as the Amex mailings go, I haven't gotten one from them since I upgraded my PRG to Platinum in April 2017.

I have read people say they churn the Amex Amerprise Platinum after shutting it down for 30 days. And never pay an annual fee. So I suspect you wouldn't have to pay the annual fee.
