RUMOR Of A New Citi Premium Credit Card.

While I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from this yet, reader @ithacxa shares a survey he received from Citi regarding a possible new card product, called the Citi Explore. It presents a few different versions of the cards, though the core benefits seem to be the same across them. Let me once again emphasize that as of now this is just a survey, so this is a card that may or may not every be introduced.

This new premium card is supposedly called the Citi Explore. The card has a $450 annual fee, and offers:

A $300 annual travel credit
3x points on travel and dining
Points worth 50% more when redeeming for travel through the Citi ThankYou portal (in other words, 1.5 cents per point)
A TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry fee credit
Either a Priority Pass membership with unlimited visits, OR a Priority Pass membership with 10 visits per year and 2x points on gym memberships (which is a benefit that’s similar to The World of Hyatt Credit Card

It’s normal for card issuers to throw around different card ideas in a survey. Let me once again say that it’s possible the above card will never be introduced. However, at a minimum I do think it’s interesting to discuss, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the new card that’s introduced:

The Sapphire Reserve has been so popular, so it’s not surprising to see another issuer copy the idea
We should expect the fourth night free benefit wouldn’t be offered on any new card, given how costly and valuable of a perk it is
It’s interesting that the different survey ideas being thrown around all have the same core benefits (a $300 travel credit, triple points on travel and dining, etc.)

They should remove the priority pass membership and global re-entry and offer something else instead. Maybe a higher category spend than the CSR. Really I don't care about transfers either. Just let me book through their travel portal.

This would totally make sense as a ThankYou Prestige replacement. While I hope that PC availability will come back for Prestige, this does essentially put a Citi card right on par with CSR, and I would probably go for it. Citi does offer some truly good targeted incentives for cardholders that can make rewards easy to rack up. I'm currently on a 4 bonus TYPs for PayPal (that's 7 total for the 3x categories) up to $625 and 5% statement credit on up to $1,000 in purchases on my DP card.

Also pretty sure that when that survey began, there was an agreement not to disclose the survey. I've done my fair share of surveys and there's one particular fairly popular credit union (not NFCU) that is considering launching something to compete with the PenFed PCR.

I think a mod should put "RUMOR:" in the title of this thread.

You're making the people here excited over a survey.

This card would be great for those who are over 5/24 and it's almost identical to the CSR. I still think Citi should add an additional perk to differentiate the card a little, but I'm sure they have their reasons for doing what they do.

If its anything like the other TYP cards Gas counts as travel so it would be slightly better version of the CSR imo on earning front. The TYP partners on the other hand need some help

Agreed with everyone above, it's darn near a spitting image of a CSR. I'd expect at least to see something else that's 'new' in there or upon release, if ever released, to nudge folks over the tipping scale on it. We shall see.

1.5 cpp on TY portal travel? Let's keep in mind this is the same issuer that nerfed 1.33 cpp to 1.25 on Prestige...and of course, nerfed 1.6 on AA flights.

1.5 cpp would seem...vulnerable.

I could see some many/24 mile enthusiasts going for this...people who like or are happy to use exotic transfer partners. I don't see Citi making much money at it, though. They are imitating Chase but still have less popular transfer partners (for normal people) and worse customer service.

Maybe Citi will give it the missed event ticket protection perk or something unique.

CSR you can transfer to United, Southwest and Hyatt I believe. Don't think Citi has any American Based transfer partners.

These premium credit cards are all the same for the most part. Atleast Amex and USB try to do something different then travel and dining on the top tier cards.

If citi really wanted to shake things up and be unique. They should get American as a transfer partner. I don’t understand why they have a AA cobranded card but they arent a TYP partner.

There’s not a single CC points system except the AA cobranded cards that lets you transfer directly into American.

They are regional though arent' they. Seems like if you live in Boston they would be a good choice but not if you lived anywhere else. Well unless you wanted to fly to Boston

They just need to get better (subjective) airline partners.

One of the domestic airlines in the big 3 alliances would be helpful. It makes so much sense to add American Airlines, since Amex has delta , where they also have cobranded card with, and chase has united which they also have cobranded card with. The other issue is a lot of their partner overlap with Amex and chase Singapore airlines and Virgin Atlantic for example.

There isn't much for them to copy. The essence of the PenFed PCR is 2% back on all spending, with the ability to redeem right away in $5 increments. That's it. I believe Alliant FCU, State Dept FCU, and USAA all have similar cards. The credit union that needs such a card is NFCU.

If you can’t beat them, join/copy them. Lol... this goes to a lot of companies out there not just financial institutions ... nothing original of their own or /competitiveness.

I'm okay with Citi/Barclays cobrand churning and BBP giving 2.8 Avios (2x with a 40% promo) on up to $50k spend.
