New Amex Offer: 500 MR Points for $35 Gas Purchase

Check your Amex MR-earning cards... there's a new Amex Offer for 500 MR points for a $35 gas purchase.

I had the offer on my PRG and ED... the offer can be used three times, but it takes a single purchase of $35 to trigger it (smaller purchases won't accumulate.)

I'm still trying to figure out a way to use it myself... I usually only fill-up once per month, and after the Kroger discount of $1 off each gallon it's not often I get to $35. I know many don't have this problem, though.

I sure could've used this yesterday! Just like you said, I don't need to fill up very often, that would've been a good one.. Update, it is in my Everyday card offer as well! Also currently have within my offers on Platinum:

Marriott: Spend $300, get $60 back
Hampton or Hilton Garden Inn: Spend $175, get $30 back
Amazon: Spend $50, get 2,000 MR's
AshleyFurniture: Spend $250, get $50

Those are all valuable to me as well but the gas is a nice bonus.

I don’t have this offer either. Is there a reason not everyone gets the same offers on their accounts?

Sorry I’ve only had my Amex PRG for about 5 months, so still a little new to how Amex does things.

That's me as well. Even when I'm bone dry it often only comes to just under $34 after the discount. I guess in this instance I could forego that just to get the 500MR, BTW isn't that only worth $5?

Also, will the gas station code correctly? Such as Kroger/Fred Meyer, or any grocery gas station?

Yep, I also value it at (or around) $5... if it's an either/or with Kroger fuel points, the fuel points at $1/gallon will obviously win in my case.

As for stacking the two, i.e. if Kroger will trigger the offer, that's an excellent question. I know that my local Kroger does code as 'gas', but Amex has Kroger fuel stations explicitly excluded from earning the 3% on the BCP... since this is an Amex Offer I don't know if that would apply or not. Edited to add: Based on a closer look at the fine-print, probably not.

Unless somebody has a recent data point we'll need a guinea pig, but unless I find myself doing more traveling than I'm anticipating the next couple of months it won't be me.

Don’t have the offer on any of my accounts or AU card login’s.

Kroger gas has never worked for 2X points if I pay directly at the pump with PRG or ED for me. Not sure if anyone has had better luck there

Well rats... sorry you didn't get this one.

As for the 2x on the PRG or 3% on BCP I wouldn't expect either of those to work (for the extra points/cash back) but I'm still curious if the purchase would trigger the Amex Offer. Maybe we'll have a data point come in between now and the end of the year (when the offer expires). Edited to add: Probably not... see below.

Well, we might have the answer... Doctor of Credit's post from yesterday pointed me back to the fine-print, which on closer look does have the same restrictions as the PRG/BCP, so it looks like Kroger most likely won't trigger the offer (or isn't expected to, anyway).

Dang...wish I had the offer. I could have easily knocked out the offer within a day. Heck, my SUV would have knocked out 2 of the 3x use (cost almost $80 bucks to fill the SUV) in one fill up if I stop the pump at $35 bucks. Between the Yukon and the Charger that would have been a one-day 1500 MR sweep. Arg!

Thanks for the posting. I typically do not have a lot of the great offers that people mention but lucked up today --- added the gas offer to my PRG. I drive a Wrangler in CT . High gas tax and low mpg = $43 a tank. Second car is a Mini which is fantastic on gas but needs premium fuel. Also comes in at $43 a tank Hahaha....can't win but at least i have this 1500 points coming my way!
Amazon offer would be great but I dont have it. Bummer

Thanks for that link UncleB. I had to laugh at the comments on that page, as one idea was pretty good... I'll fuel up with some Premium to help narrow the gap of possibly not hitting $35 on fill-up . That is, unless we can do the fuel purchase with a bag of chips and a drink inside the gas station and still have it all coded as gas.
