Hi. Has anyone called Amex to try and get a retention offer for the platinum card lately? I just got hit with $550 annual fee and I’m going to call them and see, I was just curious if anyone has had any success. I put $23k through the card in 2017, and 65k in 2016.
Thanks!

I'll be calling them in few days as well. Your chances of getting a bonus are really high, if you have never had a retention bonus in the past.

So far, I have had 40K , 20K and 10K retention bonuses on my platinum.

Oh wow, what number did you call and what did u specifically ask them if u don’t mind me asking ? I called the regular platinum customer service rep, and all he offered me was 1500 MR points. I was shocked that’s all they offered. Do you call and ask directly for the retention?

They offered 10K points as retention bonus last year but I declined, that also helped in getting 50K this year.

Ok that makes me feel better. As I spent next to nothing on the card. Unless you are spending a lot of that money on airfare I think there are a lot better cards out there for your spend even with the retention bonus.

Agree. I use Platinum mostly for air travel and categories where other cards in portfolio offer the same returns (1 pt/$).

I have a Venture, Amex BCP, Hilton Honors (the free one), and the Platinum. I use all regularly.

If you are interested in earning MR Points then I would suggest PRG as they have bonus categories which are supposed to be even higher soon (Groceries, Gas, Restaurants) . Fee waived first year and you can get $200 in airline gift cards first year. 50k MR sign up bonus if you haven't had the card before. Amex Every Day Preferred gives you 1.5 MR Points on everything if you use the card 30 times in a month.

If you are just want cash plenty of cards have 2 percent cash back with no annual fee. Citi Double Cash for example.
