If you're thinking about maximizing the CSR, it's probably worth getting the other UR-earning cards before you max out 5/24 first. Otherwise, it just comes down to whether you'll use the credits from the Amex Gold card.

I am new to these forums. I have been looking into the changes to the Amex Gold and comparing to the Everyday Preferred when it comes to points for groceries and overall which is the better card. Any feedback on which you prefer?

Also, should I get one of these cards before CSR or CSP? I am currently 1/24. I have Delta Amex Gold with $15/k limit opened 2 months ago and a Credit Union Card with a $12,500 with 14 years of history. My Experian Fico is 687, but should go up once my Delta Amex hits my credit reports.

Bro, the first thing you should do is get the Chase cards first that are under 5/24, I would say get the Preferred, you can always downgrade and upgrade. I would also get the IHG and Hyatt for the free nights and since it doesn't affect 5/24, and then I would go for Amex, if you have a long relationship with them, they don't pull a hard one on you.

I thought about getting the Amex Gold, but since I'm from the West Coast, I don't really see to much of a use for it and if I ever want to cancel it, it will affect me so you have to keep it forever pretty much and the structure could change so its why I just get the Amex Everyday and use its amex offers and groceries. Hopes it helps bro!

Like others have said get the Chase cards first.

Once you are ready for Amex I would get the Gold first. It comes with a 50k sign up bonus and $100 credit first year. You can get two $100 airline gift cards so that would basically eliminate the annual fee. And you would have more points to use to see if you actually like them.

I will go against the previous suggestions about applying for a premium Chase card like the CSR or CSP now. Since you only have one account opened in the last 14 years there's a strong likelihood that you will be denied for having "too few revolving accounts open."

It always helps to think about these situations from the perspective of a lender; most will be understandibly cautious when seeing sudden activity on a credit report that had no new accounts opened for a long period. If you search these forums you will see several examples of people denied for having too few credit card accounts like this one who had a score > 800: Chase Sapphire Reserve denial.

My suggestion would be to get either a Chase Freedom or Freedom Unlimited card before your Delta Gold card reports; then wait at least six months before applying for the CSP or CSR. You should add a Chase Freedom card BEFORE the Delta card reports because your score will decrease when it reports since you will now have a new account penalty i.e. your Age of Youngest Account will now be 0 months. Fortunately your Average Age of Accounts wouldn't be affected too badly; as long as your AAoA remains above 2 years you'll be fine.

A case for AMEX gold first — People are too quick to point out 5/24. However, with a score below 700 and too few revolving credit, I think you have a much better chance of getting approved for the gold card now than you do with either Chase cards. but as always, YMMV, doesn't hurt to try (except for the hard pull).

A case against AMEX gold — I think @TheBoondocks has good point that the dining credit discriminates based on location, primarily, Shake Shack (and to an extent, grubhub/seamless). For this reason, I personally am struggling if the AF increase would be worth it if I could not use this credit. Grubhub/seamless' delivery fee would eat the dining credit, the other (ruth's chris) being uber-expensive that the credit won't even cover the tip, while last one is well, desserts (mostly). I do not eat cheesecake every month.

Since you already opened an Amex Delta Gold Card - I think I would recommend the Amex Gold as a better partner to your Delta Amex.

Chase cards are also fantastic - but Chase cards are not a good fit if you normally travel on Delta Airlines. The Ultimate Reward points are not transferable to Delta Skymiles accounts if you are trying to earn free flights. You would have to try and source free Delta flights from Virgin Atlantic and/or Air France or redeem the points through Chase Travel portal at 1.25 or 1.5 cents each depending on whether you havve the CSP or the CSR. And in order to maximize the value of Chase points - you would want to go all in and get the Freedom and the Freedom Unlimited. And then use 1 of those 3 cards for all you purchases.

With Amex - the combo of the Delta gold card and the Amex Gold card - that is a very nice two card combe that will advance your status with Delta and be a much better way to earn free Delta flights or Skymiles that you can also use for upgrades to Business or First Class.

Would i rather have a 4.5x groceries , 3x gas, and 1.5x card on everything vs a 4x groceries and restaurant card. I need to go over my restaurant spending via mint or something to actually look at how much i am spending on restaurants to make sure its worth it. I also have thought a lot about PRG when it comes to not having to worry about 30 swipe bonus every month even though I don’t think i have ever had issues meeting the min spend. The only time i think i ever did was when freedom was 5x groceries.

I don't understand the whole I am on the west coast comment when it comes to amex. Apparently there is some geographical issue with the amex gold can someone fill me in?

To OP I know people are pushing Chase but a lot of this will depend on your type and amount of spend. The first question is can you make the bonus spend requirements. Obviously the CSR requires a lot more initial spend than the amex gold card. Will you be able to redeem the points for a reasonable return? Chase URs have been devalued so they are not as valuable as they once were although they can still be good in certain circumstances. If you have a business I think pairing the business blue plus card with the amex gold is better than doing the everyday preferred. It can make sense to get both chase and amex cards but that is not necessarily the case for everybody. If you are only 1/24 you can pick up the two amex cards and then pick up some chase cards later on when they have a good SUB. If you know you want both amex and chase cards then in that situation I would app for chase first just because they can be more touchy about recent apps.

Welcome Aboard!

My two cents is to go for the Amex Gold first since you already have GDS. Login to your Amex and from the Menu go to Cards > Credit Card Offers and see if the Gold is on there... I've gone this route multiple times and was pre-approved with no hard inquries. Since you've opened the GDS only two months ago, I'm wishing you the best of luck on the CSR or CSP if that's the road you plan to take at this time... I am curious to find out if you get approved for either one from Chase...

When I go to Credit Card offers from my Amex account it appears to show me all the cards. How do you tell if your pre-approved?

From what I've experienced there's no immediate way to tell if your're PA for a specific card on the CC offers page until you click 'Apply'... Then on the next window that opens up, right up on the top (you can't miss it) it will state if you're PA. Right below on the body of that same window you'd just have to fill-in and verify some info. Note: I don't know what the windows looks like if you're not PA just saying...

Do note that the ONLY ONE in Washington state is not even open yet, while the one in SoCal are either brand new, or also only about to open. None in the bay area, none in the whole state of Oregon. These are recent expansions (I was actually surprised that there is one in Seattle, and there are stores in California outside the airport). In comparison, there is 41 in New York city alone.

Now here is a map of ruth chris'.

Gubhub:

Well, you get the idea. This means it is significantly harder to find a place to eat where one could use the dining credit. This is especially true with Shake Shack. It's like Califonia's In-n-out.

The Cheesecake Factory website suggests 20 locations in the Los Angeles area.

But maybe Platinum is the true west coast Amex. Centurions at SFO and SEA, with one coming to LAX.
