Hey guys,

So I get a call from cap one saying my payment is late. I had set up automatic payments back a couple of months ago. Usually I get an email saying my payment is due in a few days. Well the last 2 months, I haven’t received an email. I still get their concert emails etc, but I got a call yesterday saying I was 2 payments behind. I didn’t answer the call, they left a vm. I log in and sure enough, I owed for 2 payments! What the heck!?!? I’m getting ready to refi my house and now I’m going to have a 30 day late on my credit report! How can I get them to not report that??? Apparently the autopay didn’t take or something. I’m freaking out bc I have no late payments or anything bad on my report. Please help!!

That's a tough one. Sorry that happened to you, could absolutely be a glitch in the system, but I don't think Cap One is going to go out of their way to reverse that on your credit report. With all the dog ate my homework late payment sob stories they must receive (Not saying yours is one), I haven't heard of someone reversing or having a late payment cancelled.

I do have to say, with all of the convenience we have with smartphone apps now, I would set a reminder on your phone to make a payment on a certain date rather than the auto payments. I have had a friend not have one go through on Amex because he set it on some bizarre holiday or something, then it was considered late.

I have reminders set for all my payments and just use the corresponding Apps. I don't trust auto pay for very reasons like this.

Hi OP

I feel your pain but IMHO please get in the habit of checking your bank accounts and CCs, at a minimum, on a weekly basis. I’m obsessive and check mine daily even though I have both autopay and reminders setup.

Missing a payment by a day or 2 happens. But 2 months!—I really don’t think CapI is going to feel your pain. But you can always try.

GL2U

This was setup on the Capital One website? What does it show for autopay? Is the bank account correct? Was there enough money in the account?

If it is set up correctly, the Cap One needs to tell you what went wrong. If there is a mistake on your end, then you might be out of luck.

I'll then go ahead and make the minimum payment online just in case something happens that prevents it getting paid properly at the end of the cycle (e.g. forgetting the date, glitch, gremlins in my account). Then later in the month will pay it off.

So far nothing has gone wrong, but having that little bit of peace of mind that even if it does, I am covered is nice.

OP did the auto payment get set up several months ago, and you saw that auto pay was working for a while, then it stopped? And you had made no other changes to the plan? That situation would be possibly CapOne issue.

Or did you just initiate auto pay and not verify it was working? Many auto pay systems do not take effect until the period closes, so that payment has to be sent by the cardholder, and one has to closely monitor the automation until it looks flawless. Even then, it is only a covenience feature, not a fail safe you can ignore.

Keep us posted on the results. Hopefullly things work out with no 30-day late.

You did already pay to catch up, right? Regardless of the discussion the first step is always to try to minimize any damage.
