Changes to some "Premier" cards

Everyone knows the Amex Premier Rewards Gold is now just the Gold card again.

The Citi ThankYou Premier card just got a name change to just the Citi Premier card. As far as I can tell, everything else about the card is the same. I remember hearing some rumors recently about this card going away really soon. I'm guessing the name change is all it was. I do still somewhat question Citi's commitmment to the ThankYou program, though, since the card has had pretty much no changes in over a year and the Prestige card is no longer open to apps.

Speaking of no longer open to apps... the Barclay Arrival Premier card is no longer open to apps. That didn't last long. I'm guessing they didn't get as many applicants as they'd hoped they would. I'm thinking this probably means the program was a failed experiment and I wonder how long we can expect the travel portal and transfer partner program to stick around.

Barclay was too conservative, and they shot themselves in the foot. They created a premium card that wasn't really premium, and nobody was fooled, so the card died.

I think the Barclay card was designed with how to get themselves with maximum profit while giving out the least in rewards. It was like they totally didn't understand that the card had to appeal to consumers.

I noticed very recently that they dropped the "Thank You" on my online account. Now looking at the card page...

...they have also dropped the "Thank You" from the card itself. I haven't been alerted of any changes, and the card's page still lists the same 1x, 2x, and 3x categories with a 50k TYP SUB. This must tie into my inability to PC my Diamond Preferred to Prestige.

thats interesting that they dropped the TY part of the naming of the card just checked my account as well. Also btw i noticed the 50k when you sign in with your account info, but there is a 60k SUB offer out there in the wild.

I think public offer is 50k , but i used link today that links you to apply for 60k offer. Not sure we are allowed to link outside websites, so just google premeir 60k and its still out there. I am actually trying to decide what to do with that card. It would be nice to have an a MC i can bring over seas.

Its a good card imo its just very underrated. I will likely renew mine next year as I find the card useful.If you cant utillize the transfer partners, use the points in the portal towards hotels. You still get 1.25c a point which is pretty great for hotels.

IMO, Citi is just lost in their CC reward programs. The only card they made better was AA 2x dining and grocery which they didn’t even include the exe. card. Amex basically has the same transfer partners w/ better earning rates.

Their DC card is so obsolete with the game of 1pt when you use and 1pt when you pay, 3x or more is the new standard for dining and travel.

Someone with some imagination needs to take over their offings because they are really late to the game. Then again they may just milk and push AA cards forever and give up on everything else.

I would hardly call the DC card obsolete. No cash back card that I'm aware of offers more than 2% on non-category spend. The 1% when you spend and 1% when you pay scheme should not make a difference if you're paying in full.

want annual fee cards
want to have credit accounts with undesirable banks (Barclays)
want to have to use stupid pre-defined "credits" to make my card worthwhile

Haha, I do one business trip per year, but it’s paid by my company. I had big ambitions of traveling more, but never came to fruition. All of my points have been used for statement credits. Such a waste! So that’s why Citi DC is a good choice for someone like me.

The Double Cash card is the one I recommend the most to those who aren't trying to play the points game. You can't beat 2% cash back for doing nothing except what you are supposed to do with a credit card. Plus, every 6 months it's easy to get a credit increase without a hard pull so it's a great card to build your limits with.

Right now in my line up its between that and CSP since they have the most similar reward structure for me. With CSP you can also get 1.25 cpp on all travel I believe ?

If they want to be competitive they really should think about adding AA as a partner that would potentially be a game changer. It would be benefit for customers i think so each program will have a us carrier, and AA miles to me are probably the most valuable of the US carriers. They have a lot of over lapping transfer partners with UR and MR , and a lot of partners that are either unusable or nobody would ever use.

I agree that they need more transfer partners to stay competitive with Chase and Amex. Fortunately, Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic are there and work with my awards ecosystem if I want to move points.

Yes, CSP is 1.25 same as Premier (and Prestige) for portal redemptions. Let’s try to steer this thread back to the topic of the Premier as literally half of this thread is already about the Double Cash card.

The Citi TYP and CSP are very similar and are obviously meant to compete with each other. However, by themselves, the TYP clearly wins on points earning. The advantage of the CSP is being able to pool points from other higher eaqrning cards. There really aren't any other cards in the Citi lineup that could be used to team up with the TYP.*

As for transfer partners, the key to taking advantage of those, in any points system, is to look beyond that particular airline. As an example, maybe you don't plan to fly to Europe anytime soon, but you should still look at FlyingBlue for redemptions on US domestic and Asia flights because sometimes they offer better rates on Delta and Korean than those airlines' own loyalty programs. Know your airline alliances and which airlines share metal. That will really expand the usefulness of some transfer partners.

Also, yes, some transfer partners overlap. I actually see that as a feature for the TYP because I can pool those points with MR points on FlyingBlue, Singapore, and Virgin (and I have!).

*You could make an argument for the Citi Sears card (configured for TY points), but I really don't think that card is going to be around for much longer anyway.
