AMEX and Hulu (Get $5 Credit)

So I was clicking around on the AMEX site after paying my balance and wandered into the Offers section. Right now, they're offering a $5 credit (4x) when you spend $5 or more on Hulu! I've already added my AMEX card to my Hulu account so I can start paying my subscription with it. Just wanted to share! If you're like me, then every penny counts and heck... I'll take $20 off my subscription for 4 months!

Oh Nice!

If you use Hulu, keep an eye on those offers. I did one last year, or maybe year before, that gave me $25 back after I spent $25 in three months with Hulu. With the commercial free plan, that's essentially two free months.

The benefits section? Or you mean Amex offers?

I already had Hulu billed to an Amex, so they excluded me on all five cards (if it's a regular Amex offer).

Another case of Amex rewarding disloyalty.

Yep, I resubscribed last night to the limited commercials program. I noticed there was a 1200 mile offer in the Alaska portal, so for $5.99/month with $5.00 credits from Amex each month, that works out to me paying $3.96 for 1200 Mileage Plan miles (~$21 value), plus I'll earn 6 Delta SkyMiles each month for a total value of $0.29 on top of that!

I didn't have the Hulu offer on any of my three cards, but it is on my AU's Gold card so I'll be using that to pay Hulu for a few months.

Oops! Yes, I meant the AMEX offers. I was thinking of my PayPal card, I think...

You can use the offer if Hulu is already billed to your Amex, but in that case they probably won't give one the offer (it's targeted). They are likely looking to entice people who don't already use the card with that specific business.

I suspect this is why they skipped over me as well, yet my AU did get it.

Nice article find!! I already have a Hulu account, so I can't sign up... Don't want to deal with creating a new account anyways. Still nice, though!

Yeah, the Drop offer isn't a good fit for me either, but it might work out for some new users (like you I'm not willing to start over after all this time... LOL).

Yep, that's what I'm doing.

The problem we're speaking of is how Amex tends not to target people who are already using an Amex for their Hulu charge (or have in the past)... they only seem to give the offer to people who haven't used Amex to pay for Hulu before.

I think the targeting likely has a lot to do with the agreements they make with participating merchants for Amex Offers. Wouldn't the goal of any marketing strategy like this be to acquire new customers and reacquire lapsed customers? I've had a Hulu subscription a few times over the years (and always paid with an Amex like most things), but not in at least a year or two, so I can see why I'd be targeted. Amazon? Sure, I used to do all of my Amazon shopping with Amex, but not for a long time except when they give me offers - likely to entice a "lapsed" customer into purchasing on Amazon again. So even though I do a lot of shopping at Amazon, I usually get the nice targeted offers because I rarely pay Amazon with an Amex card these days. Likewise, there are offers that I see a majority of people reporting having in their accounts here and "other places," but I don't get them on any of my cards or AU cards. Delta comes to mind, and it makes sense. Why would Delta want Amex to target someone to spend money at Delta in exchange for a discount when it's fairly obvious that they're going to spend money at Delta anyway? If I were in Delta marketing and saw that cardholders with recent Delta purchases were being targeted, I'd be unhappy about the way my discount dollars were being applied.

Oh yeah, how they target the offers definitely makes sense... of course that won't keep us from complaining about it, though.

Now that I think about it, Amex has also given me some rather silly offers on the surface:

Spend $300+ at Marriott properties and get a $60 statement credit.

Spend $300+ at Starwood properties and get a $60 statement credit.

Spend $500+ at Ritz-Carlton properties and get a $100 statement credit.

First one was pretty obvious that I was going to use it (and did). Second one for a frequent Starriott-Carlton customer with a SPG card seemed a bit silly as well, although since it only applied to US properties and I only had a Canadian Sheraton stay booked at the time, it actually didn't get used before expiration. The third one is iffy on whether it will be used before expiration, and since it may entice me to choose RC over a slightly cheaper Marriott or Westin, perhaps it's actually not that silly to target me.

I got this on my Rose Gold card, and since Hulu is having a one month free and then $5.99 after that for a year, I will only be paying $0.99 for Hulu for three of those months

Funny thing is I had Hulu before, cancelled it and just signed back up with the same email address I had it on before and I still got the trial

OP, thanks for posting this. This Amex offer is right up my alley.

I've never had a Hulu subscription before and was planning to start one in the next week or so. I hadn't logged into my Amex account in a while, but I logged in to check and was initially thinking that I didn't get the offer. I kept scrolling though and near the bottom of the list........there it was.

I have it on 3 accounts(mine, my brothers, and my stepfathers). I'd LOVE to use it but I just prepaid my Hulu. I won't be billed for 6 months. UGH! $20 savings would've been so sweet! I wish there was a way to buy gift cards on Hulu.com.

I hope they do this for Netflix.
