AMEX Rose Gold Non-Contact Less - "What we have here is a failure to communicate"

I now have 2 AMEX Rose Gold cards. I have 2 more cards being expedited. One gold and 1 rose.

My saga started on 10/4. I requested a Rose gold non-contact less card for my existing PRG account. On 10/13 I received a contact less Rose gold card. On 10/15 I advised AMEX of the error and requested a non-contact less card. Yesterday I received a second contact less card.

Today the AMEX CSR says their system does not allow the initial mistake and re-order of the same card to be corrected. My original request is considered a PC. I must now be PC's back to a chip/signature Gold. Then PC'd to a chip/signature Rose gold card. In the end I will have received 4 metal cards. Three must be returned to AMEX for their disposal.

What is wrong with a contactless card? Can you still use your plastic card? I would say nevermind at this point and just ask to reactivate the plastic one.

It'll be interesting to see one. I thought they do not make them. I was thinking this might be a reason they kept sending you a contactless card, in combination with the CSR's ignorance of their own products.

No effort at all. The day the card came out I requested a non-contactless Rose Gold card and it was expedited in two days. Doesn't sound like a lot of effort to me...

That's exactly what the AMEX CSR asked. I advised her that the question was not a good look!

I prefer non-contact less for security reasons. No, the plastic card was deactivated. I'm actually taking one for the Myfico team. Several people have posted that AMEX CSR's are saying non-contact less is not possible. But at least one poster received one. If this process works, others will know they can request the card they want.

It sounds like the CSRs are now being told to not offer the non contactless version anymore. But here's the thing, if that's the case the CSRs should say that the non contactless functionality is no longer available for the Rose Gold and not that it doesn't exist because that's a lie...which looks bad on AMEX's part because now you are a brand who lies to your consumers.

Thanks for posting. Does it have a heavier feel to it? I think my personal reason for wanting to request one is just the feel to it if it is indeed one solid piece of metal like the non-contactless Platinum.

Personally I consider it no worse than chip and signature from a security perspective. If PIN were required when inserting and not required when tapping, on the other hand, it might be different.

That does make me wonder though--perhaps AmEx was getting a lot of requests for the non-contactless version and decided to kill it before it threatened their push for contactless? There is a fair bit of baggage from the last time banks tried to push it, after all.

Since everyone seems to be interested in the feel or weight of the non-contactless version.

@jude Is there actually any difference ? How is the feel compared to platinum or CSP ??

It’s my personal opinion that the non-contactless is still going to be lighter and not as thick as the platinum. Part of the allure of the platinum is the heavy card for a decent amount of users. And this is the best way to get a metal card for most people through the Amex gold.

No problem. I don't have a contactless version of the Gold/Rose to compare it to, but it feels slightly heavier than my CSP but it's only noticeable if you hold both cards in different hands at the same time. Yesterday I did go out for Ramen and the cashier dropped my card on the counter (I was sort of mad) and it made a light clink noise which I never got out of my CSP.

I think besides that, I like that the contactless symbol isn't on it because something about the "open space" on this card adds to the asthetic and it makes it look cleaner, and in turn more prestigious, IMO. Also, the material feels sturdier than I thought it would.

One thing I considered is if the discontinue of the non contactless Rose Gold is an attempt at maintaining the prestige of the Platinum since some people, who aren't the targeted demographic for the Platinum, just got it because it's weight and prestige. Just a thought. Regardless, it sucks that AMEX is taking the ability to choose away

So, aside from aesthetics and the "feel" of purported heftiness, is there really a major issue with the contactless version that folks have a gripe? I guess at the end of the day, how is this life changing that can help others or even AmEx? They certainly seem to be responsive and accommodating given the recent demands and introduction of a new material for this card.

I've yet to see any major articles citing any imminent breach would occur with contactless CCs, plastic or otherwise.

Regardless whether contactless/non-contactless, a variety of fraud instances and losses are attributed with cards not even being present 🤷‍♂️

I feel like I just entered an alternate universe. If the reason for requesting a non-contactless card is about esthetics; I'd think that the EMV chip spoils the look of the card far more that a discreet NFC symbol.
