I just upgraded my Platinum to a Quicksilver (no fee). I want to get a travel card as I will be traveling in the future on a regular basis. I decided to try and prequalify for the Venture card but was given the options of a QS1 or Platinum MC.

My question is should I wait to get a Venture? Or should I get the QS1 then combine it into my QS in 6 months? My wife was just approved for a QS1 a couple weeks ago witha $3,000 SL. My QS only has a limit of $500 with no CLI insight for 6 months.

+1 Like @Anonymous has mentioned, the Venture is a 2% limited redemption, cash back card with an annual fee. Outside the welcome bonus and hotels.com it wouldn't be in my rotation. There are MANY cards out there that offer 2% without annual fee. Heck, it's almost hard to find a card that doesn't offer at least 2%.

If you're looking for a true travel card first you need to determine what's important to you (i.e. hotel/airfare). Once doing that, narrow down on the airlines or hotel properties you frequent the most. Only then you can start to hone in on the specific cards that cater to those brands that offer decent rewards and maybe even a nice welcome bonus.

Don't make the mistake I did. When I first joined this here forum, Delta (Gold) was a hot topic and an easy card to land. I jumped all over it, got the welcome bonus, and then decided that they probably weren't the best airline for what I wanted and where I wanted to go. My wife made good use of the miles as she (at the time) was Delta all the way. After a little research I realized that Alaska Airlines is much larger in my area, they go to the places I frequent, and they partner with American Airlines (along with many others) that helps fill the gap.

A little bit of research would have helped me make a more informed decision. Take your time, narrow down what you're wanting in a travel card. Don't forget to take a look at perks such as waived baggage fees, upgrades, mile values, etc. There are LOTS of knowledgeable folks around here who love helping others. Do a little homework and feel free to ask as many questions as you like...trust me, these fine folks here will help steer you in the right direction once you give them enough info on what you're looking for.

Good luck and chime in if you have questions!

So armed with this information on the Venture. Woild it make sense to get the QS1 and just combine in with my low CL on my QS in 6 months? I understand the theory of the combine but never dealt with it in practice. I did not get a CLI beyond the credit steps cli. So either my upgrade timing was bad or i am bucketed. My scores are higher than my wife who got a 3k SL in her QS1

Like others have said, Venture only makes sense for the SUB. Since you have the QS, I would get the Venture for the SUB then combine it into QS before AF hits. This is what I plan on doing but instead I’ll be combining mine into my Savor.

Have you looked at the Citi Premiere card? This is a travel card for only 95$ year with the 1st year waived. Unfortunately, Citi has some lackluster transfer partners so that could be a dealbreaker for you. I personally use the portal to redeem my points for 1.25c a point.

With a Dec 2017 BK - it will be a while before banks are going to approve you for a better credit card - I think you are doing all you can for now. You need time. That BK needs to age and get further and further into your past.

Here is what I think I would do - I would stand pat with the Cap One products I have - use them actively and pay in full every month. In Jan 2020 - I would come out of the garden and look and see if there are any Discover Cards that I can get. If not - I would garden for another 6 months - then try Discover again. Rinse and repeat. After getting a Discover - wait another 6-12 months and try and get my foot in the door with Amex.

I have seen people on these forums with better credit than me that have BKs on their record (I do not) - so it can be done and you can come back stronger and better than ever - but those same BK people with better portfolios than mine - most BKs are 5 years or more.

Get the PayPal MC it has no FTF on that it is a 2% card and will treat you better than the venture. Probably the best card available to you with a recent BK and offers a decent return with no FTF..
As far as traveling goes, the Venture is really only good for hotels.com.
If that’s not going to be of use to you, then the 2% back isn’t really worth it. You’d have to spend $19000 dollars to justify the $95 AF. Of course the SUB helps, but if you don’t use hotels.com, then long term it’s not the card you want. The global entry doesn’t do much for the AF either.

Check prequals and cardmatch to see if you have a shot anywhere else. Literally any other bank outside of Discover has a better travel card.

Thank you for the reply/advice. I will take it to heart. But yes the BK7 is holding me back. You would think that with a recent BK it would open you up, no debt no risk of another BK for 8 years. But I do understand the trepidation. For the record my BK was over medical bills that BCBS chose not to cover.

So when you stay stand pat are you saying stick with the one QS that I have or get the QS1 as well? I was confused with the stand pat but use "them."

My scores have rebounded a lot faster than I ever thought they would but pre BK I did have a good history with everyone I had.

As a last ditch effort ok but really Cap one is garbage unless you start(bucket) on the venture.

Thanks for the reply, If I decided to get the QS1 I was just going to combine them into the QS to stop the AF. I didn not think I would be able to PC anycard into a QS as I already had one.

Just make sure you don't carry a balance on it!

Thanks for the reply, I did include a Synchrony account in my BK, for only $300 but it was included and 2 others that they closed immediately . I was going to stay away from Synchrony for at least 2 years. I have read sucess stories with Synchrony post BK even those that IIB I am just trying to keep my HPs low atm.

Thanks for the reply, I agree the after looking at it again the Venture may not be for me. Most trips would be reimbursed by work and they don't use hotels.com. I am leaing towards the QS1 even with the AF to get another unsecured under my belt. But I am just at my 6 months with my unsecured Plat MC that was PC'd to QS. I may try and wait. I got burned with a pre-qualify from Bank of America but was denied on application. I did not recon but think I will try to. I applied 2 weeks ago.

For BoA, if BK is cited as a reason, they likely won't budge OP. Hopefully, they weren't IIB, otherwise expect to be on their blacklist for a while.
