@Anonymous wrote:
Call Barclay. At the least you should be able to make a $100 payment to your card giving you a negative balance. Then you'll be able to make the purchase.

I am not sure about Barclays but most issuers won't let you create a credit balance by overpayment or they at least limit it to say 10% of your CL. The way around that is to push a payment from your bank instead of having the issuer pull the payment.

If you try to purchase something over your credit limit, it will probably not go through.

Going over your limit will not yield you getting a CLI, If anything it won't look good to your creditor.

Creditaddickt's suggestion of prepaying your card so that you have a negative balance is probably the easiest/best way to do what you want to do and it also will very much show that you utilize the card enough that you need a CLI. This way you don't even have to deal with the issuer it's all automatic and by prepaying you're essentially artificially increasing your limit.

@MakingProgress I believe you misread the OP then.

"I want to buy a phone that's roughly 600$ but my Uber visa credit line is 500$"

The "but" denotes a problem that he's noticed that prevents him from making the purchase: that he wants to charge $600 to a card with a $500 limit.

"are there any loopholes/methods to buy the phone with that card?"

Here he acknowledges that conventionally he is unable to make a $600 purchase on a card with a $500 limit, and thus has a dilemma. So if OP knows this and is asking for ways around this, then it's clear to me that he has no intention of actually spending over his CL.

But as always, I could be missing something.

I'd just ask Barclays. I have the Uber Visa as well, and they gave me a low SL as well, until I called back 15 minutes after to get it raised. RIght now, it is my lowest limit card. I think it is ridiculuous to offer a SL too small to even cover the SUB requirements. TBH, this is the only card I have that I hate dealing with, because of Barclays.

$500 isn't a "we'll see how much you use it" limit; it's a "we have some concerns, but we're willing to take a chance with you" limit.

Spend alone may not get you a SP CLI. It may also just take time for your accounts and inquiries to age.

Ugh, Barclay. I don't hear much of anyone who doesn't have issues with Barclay in some capacity at some point in their account ownership. They bait and switched me (us) on the Sallie Mae Rewards card, took our 5% gas/grocery/bookstore(Amazon) and left us with some 2% on utilities crap, then wouldn't let me PC it into anything at all. I closed it within the last couple of weeks lol.

This way you don't even have to deal with the issuer it's all automatic and by prepaying you're essentially artificially increasing your limit.

just called then and tried that and they said i cant do that.

I might try spending 100-200$ in the mall then return stuff

What did they mean that you cannot do? There are at least two things it could mean.

a) You cannot have a negative balance. This may be true by paying through the site, but you can certainly push from your bank and create a negative balance. (+1, They were referring to paying extra from the Barclays site, you can push to them, I had a Barclays card and pushed all the time. Have pushed an extra 1000 more than once for a similar reason ~not the Barclays card ~)

b) even with a negative balance, your available balance is your credit limit. Some cards are like this and then you won't be able to charge over the limit. (+1, I have two cards that give a higher limit based on overpayment to the card that I know, have not tried all of them. I would push from bill pay a small amount that is less than your normal spend and check the online info to see if it increases your credit limit. If it works you can push 150 or so and then after it post go buy the phone)

Be careful with some of the other methods proposed: generally you don't get full credit card protections unless the entire charge is placed on a card, so paying partly with cash, or splitting across two cards, could be bad if something goes wrong with the phone.

(+1)

@Anonymous wrote:

Or alternatively: "They had a card, Sallie Mae, which was really great! Sadly, it got nerfed"

Barclays is hardly alone in nerfing great cards. I like to give them credit for the Sallie Mae, which was very useful. I agree the replacements were horrible
