Okay I am 10 months from my BK7 filing After discharge I applied for a CapOne Plat card and got it with a $400 CL I have satisfied the criteria to have the CL upped to $500 between Oct 20 - Nov 11. I ran across the CapOne upgrade post and I clicked the link and I can upgrade my card to a QuickSilver card (not the QS1).

I want to do this but should I wait until the CL has been granted? I know I will get higher CLs with the QS card later on down the line and honsetly I am not really worried about the $100 CLI but I read that the conversion starts the CLI time clock again.

Any words of advice?

Your card is still bucketed, so don't expect much growth out of it. I believe you do have to wait 6 months from upgrade to get more CLIs though (not including the one you are already going to get).

Yeah it may have been a hasty move. I did not think about the bucket until after I did my gungho "for science" warcry. But I can't cry over spilled milk. More than likely I will get another CapOne card in the future and transfer the balance over and then reapply for the QS card. Most of if not all of my utilization is on my Discover right now to get as much of the cashback match as possible.

Agreed that the card will essentially stagnate in CLIs - maybe a hundred or two every 6-12 months. With where your scores are now, if you still want to continue with CapOne, I’m sure you’d get a much better SL with a different, newly-apped card with them. However, if you just keep on managing your accounts for another 6 months, your scores should qualify you for better cards with prime lenders like AmEx, and limits beyond the starter-card realm.

I read this weekend in one of the pinned posts about how you can get in the door with AmEx and a $1000 SL with where you’re sitting now, and could conceivably be at around $9k in a year or so, or you could garden, boost your scores up, and get in at maybe $3k to start and grow that card to $20k or more in the same one-year timeframe. Losing out on that chance (potentially) by apping for another CapOne card with its much inferior benefits, to me, would be silly.

You did do the right thing in PCing to the QS - at least you’ll get a little cash back and a nicer looking card now.

@Anonymous, nothing about the card has changed except for the verification number on the back, the annual fee, and possibly the expiration date. Upgrades don't affect the terms of the card. And they usually don't affect bucketing. If they do have an effect, it'd be for the better rather than for the worse.

I would do it from my experience.

I was on the steps program. I tried and finally got a CLI around month 4 of being in the steps program. A month later I upgraded to QS. A month after that I got my steps CLI.

Things to note -

1.The first CLI will lock you out from a requested CLI for 6 months. Cap One can give you an auto increase whenever they want.

2. I do like and prefer Cap One QS for its cash rewards (post as soon as your transaction posts) and no AF.

3. When you contact Cap One customer service - take it with a grain of salt. They often do not know what the data points on MF shows.

4. Cap One doesn't mind swips and multiple payments. Just keep your statement balance is at 30% of your total line or less.

4A. This may lead to larger credit step CLI.

I was told I would be given a $500 CLI based on completion of steps program. I must have ran enough through it (and made weekly payments) to the point where they gave me $750 CLI twice ( I had a QS1 card. It was on credit steps too).

Click that or you can just call. I called mine since I don't see any upgrade button like yours, and they said I can PC from Platinum to QS, then also CLI which they did for additional $100. Called after like 14 months since opening my Plat. You can do CLI every 6 months from the last one, based on what I've heard from them and the DP's I read here before.

I got my card today and the only thing in the packet that said Quicksilver was the actual card. Everything else. Terms and accompanied paperwork says Capital One Platinum Mastercard on it. My QS even says "Platinum" on the back. So it appears I have a Platinum with QS benefits. I am gardening atm so I will find out if I made a mistake by PCing vs Applying for one in 6 months when I ask for a CLI.

My wife who is also rebuilding decided to apply (again). I told her more than likely it was not happening. She had to include her Khols card in the bankruptcy to the tune of about $500 of her $5,000 limit. She was denied her application in April even though she prequalified. They did not even offer the secured card. She prequalified and was approved for a QS1 with a SL $3,000.00. Her card is on the way. That made me think that I should have more than likely just applied for another card once the time limit was up. As I read I can't have x2 Quicksilvers. My scores are roughly 25 - 40 points higher than hers. Going to hate to drop my first CC after the BK but looks like I will have to in the future to get a non-bucketed QS.

My wife asked me who got the better card... I told her well I don't have a AF she said yep then she said and I don't have a $400 limit either. I will let her revel in her glory... LOL

@Anonymous wrote:

I got my card today and the only thing in the packet that said Quicksilver was the actual card. Everything else. Terms and accompanied paperwork says Capital One Platinum Mastercard on it. My QS even says "Platinum" on the back. So it appears I have a Platinum with QS benefits.

You have a Capital One Quicksilver card. And you have a Platinum MasterCard.

The confusion is because Platinum is the name of both a Capital One product and a MasterCard product. Adding to the confusion is that Platinum is also the name of a Visa product.

Platinum is the name of Capital One's starter card. The Capital One upgrade path would be to Quicksilver, VentureOne, etc.

Platinum is also the name of the basic MasterCard. An upgrade would turn it into a World or World Elite MasterCard. Visa Platinums upgrade to Visa Signatures.

So one could have:

A Captial One Platinum card that's either a Platinum MasterCard or Visa Platinum (World MasterCard, World Elite MasterCard, and Visa Signature are unlikely on this product.)

A Capital One Quicksilver that's either a Platinum MasterCard, Visa Platinum, World MasterCard, World Elite MasterCard, or Visa Signature

Then there's additional confusion due to how Capital One identifies your cards when you log into your account. They can use either the Capital One or Visa/MasterCard branding. I have three Capital One cards. One is a Quicksilver Visa Signature that's identified as a Quicksilver. Another is a Savor Platinum MasterCard that's identified as a Savor. And the third is a Quicksilver World MasterCard that's identified as a World MasterCard.

OP, as suggested earlier, I’d hold off on applying for another CapOne. Groom what you have and soon your scores will qualify you for better prime cards that’ll have the added benefit of a single HP on one bureau instead of the triple pull CapOne (ridiculously) does for any card app.
