AMEX Credited for purchase- erroneously-Now what?

Hello My Fico Friends...

I have a problem. I made a purchase at Walmart (just groceries & stuff) for $151. on Nov. 2nd.

All went fine- until yesterday, I got an email with: "You have received a credit", Walmart credited the entire amount back to my card.

Credit is also dated Nov. 2nd was in AZ but my purchase was in WA state.

What do I do now? Who do I call? I don't want to have them take the $$ at my request and then have their computers find the error and recharge the amount thus I would be charged twice..

AMEX says; It's a legit credit on our end, you have to deal with Walmart-

So should I have them recharge the amount now? Or wait to see if it fixes itself first? How long would you wait before having them recharge your card? I actually have the $151. as a positive bal on my account because I paid my bill last week.

UGH!

If anyone has any advice or experience with this, I would greatly appreciate it. I have to go to town for a while but I'll check back this afternoon.

I don't understand why is this a problem ... does the card have a small limit and you worried that you'll go overlimit if they decide to recharge your card?

No, it's nothing to do with that.

I've read stories of people having a hard time getting a double charge like that removed.

I want to pay for the charges but I only want to pay ONCE.

I'm not even sure if I should go back to my store or call corporate or what.

I get what you're saying but it feels dishonest to me.. I know 'twasn't my mistake but I know about it so it makes me feel uneasy.

I guess I'll wait a bit and see if they fix the error- if not, I can try to pay them anew.

Is there any cut-off/time limit to where a store can recharge your card?

Say if 30 days (example) passes then I can safely pay it & not be changed again?

I'm not aware of a cut-off for correcting a legitimate error, but I would say that the more time that goes by the less chance of the credit being reversed.

I understand what you're saying about being honest, but in this case you've done nothing underhanded; if anything, they are causing you anxiety by creating a problem you now have to be concerned with.

I also agree with 'doing the right thing', but this is one of those cases where you could actually cause yourself a problem by not just letting the system work.

I would simply leave it alone if it were me.I don’t even think they can legally charge after credit, without your consent. They credited that purchase. Essentially closing out that transaction. They can’t just ignore that.
I agree to just leave it alone. You’re honest, reaching out could make it worse.

Im not clear what happened. Was it

a) You purchased something for $X. Your card was charged $X (which you paid at some point). Then Walmart credited it back

b) You purchased something for $X but it got reflected as a credit instead of purchase (meaning you win double!)

I've had b) happen to me, only a small amount unfortunately but it was never fixed. (ETA: this was a very long time ago. Not sure if it was a mistake by the merchant or issuer..)

Let sleeping dogs lie. Even if you were to call Wally, they would most likely tell you they cannot re-charge you, you are but a small needle in an infinite haystack. Getting a double charge resolved, if this does happen, is simple...at least I've done it as recently as last month with the antiquated FNBO system haha. Pay it forward somehow if it bothers your conscience...;-)

You got a gift. If a giant like WalMart even cares about a $151 error in the customer favor, I will be very surprised.

These sorts of transactions are part part of automated, highly standardized procedures with millions of transactions every day. Any deviation from the standard procedure, such as some bug or mistake that credits one or a few customers a week later, is not worth their time to try to chase down.

I’ve had to learn to let sleeping dogs lie with issues like this. In the past, I’ve always wanted to make things right with similar issues . Half the time they don’t understand what I’m trying to communicate, and the other times they don’t care. Most recently, I returned two defective items that had been ordered online back to my local Walmart. Since it was a paypal order they said they had to refund me in cash instead of putting it back on my card. Okay, fine. About a month later, I saw a credit pop up on my card for the same two items I’d already been reimbursed for. I just chuckled to myself, and went on with my day.

If this was from a small mom & pop business, I would be inclined to call and ask what happened to set things straight. Wal Mart is a beast in itself, where they may not even have a record of the transaction anymore if their system somehow glitched your purchase away. Realize how many transactions pass through WalMarts system every second and the idea of an error in the customers favor isn't so far fetched.

Only other question I can think of is do you still have your receipt from your purchase? Miscreants sometimes walk the parking lot for discarded receipts, shoplift the items on it and then attempt a return. If this happened and the cashier sent the amout back to the card instead of store credit (accidently?) this would explain the credit back to your card. (But then, the credit came from a store ~1200 miles away? Possible, but not likely, I guess. )

This exact thing happened to me and on the same day. We were out of state in WA and stopped at a Walmart for various sundries and the charge showed up on our amex ED Nov 2nd along with a matching credit. Odd. To date it has not been corrected and we have not called attention to it. I'll let you know if things change.

It was "A" I bought groceries, charged $151. and they credited that same amount back.

I had already paid the bill so I now have a pos credit of $151 on my account.

Thanks everyone, y'all made me laugh more than once.

I do have the receipt so it isn't anything nefarious by a third party. I actually called Walmart and they said: "We've been getting a LOT of calls like this" so they are aware of a problem. Gee thanks..

They said wait a few weeks and it will likely recharge to my card as an "adjustment". I'm glad they can fix it but it makes me more than a little concerned that a store can just adjust my account for a charge like that.. That opens up a whole new world of concern.

I'm confident they will eventually get it sorted as it's not just me so it may add up to a lot of money for them.

Anyway- that's where I am, waiting. Thank you everyone..

So more than likely Wal-Mart or their processor will submit an adjustment back to the card issuer (Amex) and then Amex will pass this adjustment back on to the cardholder. I work as a settlement specialist in my local CU's Dispute/Accounting department and I see these type of adjustments daily from merchants. The biggest culprite of these are when cardholders pay for gas at the pump and the transaction error's out or doesn't complete and cardholder is never charged and sometimes 1-2 months later we are having to make adjustments on cards. Hopefully you luck out and Wal-Mart never submits the adjustment.

This happened to me today. I see my Walmart purchase, and then a credit right below it. To the other people that this happened to, did Walmart ever recharge your card?
