This might be a bit silly but I have a not-so-brief story to share with people who will understand my happiness with this moment, as no one in the real world will.
 
I have been rebuilding for a long time. On and off since 2011 with an ex who was spending and spending and I could never get him to stop, no matter how bad things were. My son was born in 2013 and I had a small collection from that. I started the official rebuild in 2014/2015 by finally being able to get an unsecured Capital One card with $500. That card is now at $9000 after consistent use and payments. My dream was Amex so every few months or so I applied. I finally was approved in 2016 for the BCE for $1000. In 2017 I was approved for the Platinum (I was completely shocked) and have spent up to $8000 on the card per month (depending on the month). I was amazed and blown away by Amex's trust in me and watched my spending power on the Platinum go from $1000 up to $10000. I have decided to focus on MR points so I applied for the BBP and the Gold a week and a half ago (with a credit score of 657, my highest in years). They came yesterday. My limit on the BBP is $2000 but I checked my spending power for $6000 and it was approved. I put a $2300 bill on it yesterday right after activating it.
 
Then this morning, my work was trying to buy Target gift cards for the employees for Thanksgiving. Our HR lady was talking to her friend beside me and said that Citibank had declined her card and frauded it out and issued her a new card on Saturday when she tried to do the transaction. This would be transactions totaling $8000. She said she even tried with a Cashier's check and there were issues so she was giving up and going to write physical checks to everyone (which was going to take a lot of time). So I offered to try with my Amex cards. I checked my spending power and it said approved for $8000 (so then $8300 over my credit limit). I called Amex on my way to Target just to warn them. They said no problem and thanks for the notice. I got to the store and they all went through. $5000, $2000, and $1000. Driving back in the car I almost cried because of how far I've come. From CreditOne way back when to where I am now. A long time of rebuilding and working my butt off to come back from the financial and mental damage from my ex. Now I'm with Amex who trusts me because of my excellent payment history with them since 2016. I love you Amex. Thank you for taking a chance on me when none of the other big banks would. I am your woman, forever.

I'm going to name my second child Amex. Hope it's a boy. That would be a weird name for a girl.

First a huge congrats on your successes.

I’m still wowed by an employer giving a $5K bonus card to Target.

Keep up the good work and of course make sure you get payment from employer right away because you sure don’t want 100% UT reporting.

Oh no! lol. Not one $5000 card. It was 80 $100 cards total (hence $8000). The check is already in my bank account

Congrats Op!! Stories like that definitely make all Amex holders feel pretty fortunate. You have to love the stress-free feeling of knowing that even if you needed a car or a lolipop, Amex will pull through for you.

It’s really Amex life for me at this point. And I made a Count of Monte Cristo reference in my original post. Not sure anyone got it 😜

I calculated today that I could get about 180,000-220,000 MR points per year with my regular spending. I’m so excited to be focusing my spend on one rewards program.
