Which credit card to use for refilling Toll Tags

Hi everyone,

I am sure this has been asked before but I could not locate it when I searched. Which card is the best to use when refilling an E-Z Pass or Toll Tag? I would like to use one that gets me extra points, miles or cash.

Most travel cards give you at least 2%, CSP, CSR, Venture, Propel.

I use CSR for 3x points which is effectively a 4.5% reward rate.

Which cards do you have already?

How can I add all of them to my signature so that I only have to do it once? It does not have to have the pictures, CL, etc. Just a list will do. Sorry, but there are ALOT! I know, I know, I need to get rid of some of them.

For me I just use one of my least used cards so that it gets some usage. For me NTTA (Toll Tag) send out a paper statement so I know if there had been a recent refill of the Toll Tag.

Whatever card earns the highest rewards on travel (providing your issuer's charges code as travel . . . NJ EZ Pass does in my case)

I spend $200-$300 per month in tolls and am getting 4x points on my PenFed Pathfinder Amex.

Just guessing you may be well over 5/24 so more Chase cards seem a long shot.

Yes, over 5/24 for sure. I spend about $50-$60a month on tolls for myself. If you add the other cars on the TX Tag it totals about $100 or more depending if we go to Dallas or not. I live in East Texas so we don't have that many toll roads but we use the ones we have alot.

If you are into a point-earning currency, use the best earning card in that series. But for cashback, not that worth worrying:

So while $100 a month sounds a lot on tolls: suppose instead of using a flat 2% card you were able to use 5% all the time (4Q of ground transporation...) The difference is $36 a year (and you won't get 5% all year!)

Amex Blue cash had a deal a year ago - pay 100$ tolls and get 20 back. Maybe they will do it again.

Tolls usually go under ground transportation or travel. A pretty good powered card would be a US Bank Cash+ with Ground transportation as a 5% catagory. Other than that some people value their points a lot more.

The biggest thing I can say is that you might want to clean your cards up a bit as I see quite a few that overlap in their reward structure where it might make more sense to use the better card.

I use my Citi Premier for travel since I get 3 points (worth at the minimum 3.75%)

Have you had success getting Cash+ Ground Transportation to work with 5% on tolls? In the exclusions for this category it says toll stations not working, but that could be different from on-line filling of a toll account.

I agree that OP should check where the overlap is and combine / close several cards. On the other hand, periodically putting funds in the Toll account can be a good way to put $5 - $10 on cards that otherwise don't get a lot of use, to keep them active. Just make sure Auto Pay is on for the dormant cards.

Thanks for all the replies. I am working on combining/closing cards I don't use. I have been lucky and have pt spend on all of them every couple of months to keep them active but only have a certain ones I use regularly.
