Delta 75k Mail offer “pre-approved”?

My son, who is a 20 year old college student with very little income and no credit cards just received the Delta 75,000 mile sub offer in the mail. Does this mean he is pre-approved and has a better than average chance of getting approved for one of the cards? Or is this pure targeted marketing based on the fact he has a Delta SkyMiles number and flies them 1-2 times a year to and from school?

Unless the offer states he's pre-approved or pre-qualified, then it's simply a marketing solicitation based on his Delta SkyMiles membership.

Does he currently have any other AmEx cards?

Not necessarily a pre-approved offer. If the letter has something like the below, then it is very likely is one:

Alternatively if the letter explicitly states "pre-approved" or "pre-qualified" rather than "invitation to apply", then it's real pre-approved offer based on credit screening.

I have received Southwest credit card mail offers from Chase and AA offers from Citi that are not pre-approved (and do not have the pre-screen & opt out notice in the print out), only because I have flied with the airlines. The Delta offer your son received is most likely marketing based on information provided by Delta, not credit screening.

More than likely marketing......they used to send them to me all the time even though I would not be approved for the card if I had applied.

In addition to what's mentioned above, the pre-screened language can also display in any marketing solicitation, but typically a pre-approved or pre-qualified offer is typically more "solid" since those go through additional pre-screening criteria.

Provided not much changed on an individual's profile since the PRM offer was made then it's usually a shoe-in.

The only thing I receive is the Platinum Select one like this:

My theory is they are sending these offers based on information provided other than credit bureaus (in this case I guess they are from AA's database), so the credit-related prescreen rule doesn't apply here...

Yeah just purely a marketing scheme. Delta sends me those mailers like Papa Johns handing out their $7.99 specials!! Heck even Amex pre-qualifies me for Delta with a stated APR of 18.99!! In the end, I’m still on their “Do Not Pull Credit” list!!
