I have the red card for about four months two years ago. I called customer service because I was having an issue with my card and they offered to upgrade me to the Silver Aviator card.

So in that example, does the customer end up paying $3.10 for the coffee? Or $4?

That is, are they truly extra miles? Or are customers just buying a trickle of miles for 2 cents each?

My understanding, based soley on what we see, if that the customer is charged $4, basically buying the miles at 2 cents each. American often charges more (e.g. 2000 miles for $59) but with their promotion you can get 270,000 miles for just $4,425, which is about 1.6 cents each!

Still, a very odd way to buy miles, based on how much your purchase is away from the next $

It's an interesting idea, and a way to bank extra Mileage I guess.

I get the concept as I have "keep the change" with BoA. So whenever I use my debit card, they round up and put the difference into my savings.

Charge mount $4.75, amount transfered to savings $.25

Though that 25 cent is coming form my checking, BoA isn't giving me free Money.

I'd probably opt in for it, I prefer even amounts anyways.

But the BoA thing is money going to money. So, if you wanted to (well, no more than 6 times a month) you are free to move the stuff from savings back to checking (or anywhere else). Once they are miles, they stay that way. Now I guess the feeling is that you have signed up for this card for AA miles, so getting them isn't a problem. I would be more concerned if this is a good price, 2c per mile might be high.

True. But I often don't return/use change anyways, my nightstand can attest to that. I simply find it a nuisance to carry change. So if it goes to something usefull, fine. And I realize if I were to pool all that change on my own, I would come out far better. Which i'm sure some people would state. Because I'm sure the Mileage conversion rate isn't good at all.

But this program is targeting those poeple who don't like change, and feel like they're getting somthing out of it.

My current keep the change transfer amount since enrolling on 12/11/13 is $1,296.09

Tranfer that into Mileage and it equals roughly 64K Miles(if my math is correct), which is a nice trip somewhere.

All paid with a jar of change, somehing we tell our kids to do to save for something. However, it did take 5 years. lol

I veiw this as a GOOD version of saving up for a trip. Yes you could stash all your change in a jar. However when i tried that i would often take out quarters and use them to go to get fastfood. So atleast this way it MAKES you save them. My luck though is every time i got to buy anything it would be for 9.96 or 13.91 and thus im just giving them free change haha.
I do hope this will become a trend with other banks.

$0.02 per mile doesn't seem like a very good deal to me. A domestic flight is 12,500 miles for an economy one-way ticket. At $0.02 per mile that amounts to about $250 per ticket, which is... OK. As someone else already mentioned, you'd be better off buying miles from American directly when they run promotions (e.g. $0.016 per mile). Plus, if you purchase them outright (e.g. directly from AA), you can earn points on the purchase, bringing the real cost down further.
