I'm doing some research before I apply for an AMEX card in the near future. I just tried their pre-qualification site. It said - we could not find Pre-Qualified Offers for you at this time. Current EX score is 749 with a 9 year old BK reporting. I might be able to get an early exclusion from EX in two months. I gained 42 points when TU did that.

AMEX was included in my BK. I've read a number of posts about them black listing people. It seems like I won't take an inquiry if I'm on that list? I'd be looking at either a Delta Skymiles card or their Everyday card. If I'm approved, I'd like to see a SL of at least $10K.

Amex has a long memory and if you don't pre qualify it must suggest you are on their BL. I included amex in my BK they let me back in after 13 years but 1K starting limit.

You may eventually get back in with them but I highly doubt they will give you a 10SL.

They would consult their internal blacklist before pulling your credit. If you're on the blacklist, they won't pull your credit.

Of course, their practices can always change...

For $28k, you may need to continue to wait. 9 years sounds a bit short.

Also be aware that while you have no legal obligation to pay back the $28k, if they do let you back in some day they may "request" or "suggest" that you repay some or all of the $28k. If you decline to do so, it's very possible they may close a future account.

masscredit,

I think you have very little to lose by applying.

Maybe you're still blacklisted...at least you'll know, though.

Maybe you're not blacklisted but will waste a HP.

Maybe they approve you but shut you down for not repaying the old debt. Using your scores and CLs to get a ballpark idea of your income/spend, I'm assuming you think a renewed Amex relationship is not worth paying several thousand dollars. So maybe you get an inquiry and a short-lived account.

I expect you're still blacklisted, but go ahead and apply. Just keep your hopes for a "no strings attached" approval low.

I'm confident I'll be approved if I'm not blacklisted. I didn't go through all of the paperwork in my BK box. It's at least 8" thick. I believe there might have been two AMEX accounts IIB. I may give it a try by the end of the months. No BL should give me an approval with a HP. That will be worth it. If I am BL then I'll be denied without a HP. No chance of me paying any of that money back. It's behind me in a "past life". Some of it might try to haunt me once in awhile but I've moved on.

Lol, @Anonymous , i understsnd the blacklist all too well, spent 10 years in Amex doghouse but i only burnt for about $1500, thats a penny compared to 28k . But no doubt i understand wanting to pay back a creditor. If it were me and i had to choose between paying back 28,000, especially if i had it, or getting an Amex, id choose the 28,000 lol. I love Amex for sure but with my low spend and income i could live without them. Say hello to new car if i had that 28k

There is a very small chance I'd pay back $500 to get a card but the incentive would have to be VERY good. I still don't think I'd do it. While looking through my paperwork, I found that Discover was IIB for about $10K. I was approved for one of their cards the beginning of this year. There was a couple of Cap 1s. They were the first to approve me when I started rebuilding. I believe Chase blacklists. I didn't look for that statement but I think the balance was close to $87K. They probably don't like me either.

If someone IIB'ed WaMu in 2006, Chase might cite that as a reason to reject a Chase app in 2019.

Wow! If I had burned AMEX for $28K and cost Chase $87K I don't think I could bring myself to ask anything of them, ever again! Those aren't just 30-day late "baddies".

Obviously, YMMV...

I had creditors IIB that had much higher amounts. One (not including my mortgages) was over $250K. I felt bad about it at the time. My BK attorney said something like "Don't worry about it. They're just numbers...". Most of my credit card accounts that were IIB were used for a busness that was taken out when the economy went downhill in 2008. I didn't want it to happen but there was nothing I could do.

That happened to me with Sprint. I wanted to open an account but had a collections from 2014. The rep told me I had to pay $150 towards the collection in order to reopen the account. I paid the $150 and all for nothing because they denied me the account anyway and my $150 is in limbo now. It was never applied to the $400 collection. I have to go to the Sprint store where I made the payment with copies of my statements which I have and hope that they refund me my money. I can then move forward with a PFD of that $400 collection showing on my EX 😫

AMEX is known for business tactics, I personally enjoy doing business with them as well as Discover Card.

AMEX is considered the odd ball of the credit card companies. Many people do not have their cards because of the lack of acceptance. They have a phone number you can call even if they decline you. Maybe you can ask for another chance, or be placed on a lower credit line? The blacklist is the major killer. BUT you can shake the Charge Offs, and help remove you're name from the list.
