I just opened an Amex charge card account and see it lists a closing date just over a month away. Is it safe to rely on this closing date? I need to make large purchases but I don't want to do all of them and suddenly have a statement cut in three days.

You do realize an AMEX charge card is not really going to affect any utilization measures, so there would be not much benefit to paying prior to the statement Payment Due Date.

In addition to what's mentioned above, it typically takes up to 2 billing cycles (give or take) for any new AmEx CCs to report, whether it's a revolver or charge card. That's been so far my experience with some that were opened in the last 6 months.

OP if you go to Statements and Activity within Amex you'll see a closing date somewhere near the mid section to bottom part of the screen. That date is pretty solid...I've never had it change from what was there even on new accounts. Check if you want just to be sure but I think that date is pretty reliable.

Or possibly, if you're waiting on vendor payments to afford the purchase, put it on a credit card rather than a charge. I couldn't tell you how many times "next week" turned into "a few weeks"

If you don't have the money to cover if the statement cuts tomorrow, put it on a credit card and whether they pay on time or 3 weeks late, you'll be good
