Hey all. After 6 months of hitting the luv button month after month, and getting the “not at this time,” message I was fed up.

I moved ALL of my business to other accounts. Discover was not used even slightly... which definitely helped.

But within 3 hours of being approved for the AMEX gold card, they sent me an email. Discover raised my limit from $500 to $1100... they got VERY jealous I believe.

It is my belief if you don’t use the card for a solid month and apply for a card that is miles better than the discover, you’ll not only be approved for a CLI, but get sent an email saying they’ve auto CLI’d you.

Best of luck to you all!

It’s probably not a very far-fetched idea. Many people on here report SDing the card for months and getting CLIs.

There may be something to this, that Discover pays close attention to inquiries or CLIs from competitors (for customer loyalty/retention purposes, not just credit risk management).

The only unsolicited extra Discover ever gave me (over five years) was a $5 Starbucks e-gift card the day after I took a HP for a CLI from Chase (and got one). At the time, I had only three cards, so they may have figured there was some chance I could be a regular spender happy to earn 1%.

Of course, it didn't take them long to wise up...

*I'd also note that as a joint account holder, I'm ineligible for auto CLIs, so can't comment on that side of things.

I think we can come up with all types of theories, but DISCO is like cracking the da vinci code

Honestly I have put that card in SD and got zilch, used the card got zilch, so I just paid my balance off and have moved my current monthly charge to another card. This card is gonna be on ice for a long time, let's see what happens down the road LOL

I think there's some truth to the "tough love" approach with Discover. Many people have reported month after month of a solid spend with them and no CLI's at all with frequent requests... then they quit using the card cold turkey and throw it in the SD and within a cycle or two finally see a CLI. This can happen though without applying for another card. I think the fact that you acquired another card here was just a coincidence in terms of seeing that auto-CLI come. IMO, the auto-CLI would have came even without the addition of another card. I do think that the usage drop though may have stimulated the CLI.

Ive gone a month now without using my Disco, doesnt help a bit for a cli. My own personal theory is we are all bucketed from day 1 of approval. You get coded with the max youll be able to get and then it just amounts to when youll get those increases. So no matter what you do, some will always get big cli. Others small. Others not so much.

wish your premise was true.

Discover is my oldest account. I've used them quite heavily in the past and was never able to get CLI.

Since my time with discover I have opened several new accounts and gotten much bigger CL's.

The don't use and then open a new account theory has failed me several times now. Discover is by far my lowest limit card.

I never have any good offers either. No promo APR, no BT offers. Not that I need those but it would be nice to be offered them so I atleast feel like the card has some value. Right now it sits in the sock drawer for several months at a time. No auto CLI, no manual CLI.

I’ve actually given up in trying to figure out Disco’s CLI Algorithm. I’m just using it the way I would normally do with a category cc. I just hit that button after at least every three months. Granted or otherwise I just move on.
Really is just a fool’s errand... I’m just using it the way I would normally do with a category cc.

That's honestly the best approach and one that everyone ultimately should consider. If you're taking advantage of [only] the Discover 5% rotating categories, you're maxing out your rewards potential. If you're using it for anything other than those categories, you're leaving rewards on the table compared to if you were using a different card (like a 2% general spend card).

That being said, the question then becomes how much does one realistically spend on a 5% category in any given cycle? A few hundred bucks? Maybe a thousand or two during a "good category" heavy month like Amazon around holiday season? Whenever I think of it that way, having a big (say, 5-figure+) limit on a Discover is next to useless for anything other than feather-fluffing. Yes there are outlier examples like BTs here, but I'm talking for someone just using the card for 5% category spend every month. It's fun and all to try and push that limit higher (I'm #1 Guilty here) but ultimately it doesn't matter. Discover could CLD me by $30k tomorrow and while it may hurt my ego for a few days it wouldn't impact my overall profile at all or hurt me for even a single FICO point.
