Alright, this year I decided I could take a hit or two to plow forward. I've been a longtime Chase Freedom cardholder and decided to pull on the Freedom Unlimited last month. Worked out flawlessly.

I've been eyeing the Sapphire Preferred for a while too. I have been building over the past year to recover from some unfortunate setbacks. Chase has been good to me, so I wouldn't mind having a lineup.

What I'm wondering is this; even if I'm willing to take back to back HP's for the good of the future, what is the likelihood of being approved for the Sapphire directly after the CFU? And does it lessen my chances of a higher CL upon approval? I'm under the impression 5K is the minimum approval limit for Sapphire Preferred either way. And finally, does it affect the sign-up bonuses to be in a short time period? I've already met requirement for the CFU bonus and paid down before the first closing date even rolls in. Sapphire would be my final move before gardening for a good while. It especially entices me, since I have a major trip coming up in 2.5 months. Hopefully, I can hear from Sapphire cardholders and if anyone has executed a short time frame stunt like this?

Chase has not been hesitating to close new accounts and even all of your accounts if you go too quickly. I would space your apps by 6 months with them.

Although I agree that 6+ months would be safe, after a month or two you should be good. It's not like the stories we hear of people applying for two cards on the same day.

My apps for Freedom and CSP were only a month apart. It did not affect limit on CSP, but I've banked with Chase way too long.
Second app was in " we will let you know" status for about an hour.

We know that if people apply for two Chase cards on the same day, one of them will likely be closed a couple of days later.

What we don't know is exactly how long Chase wants people to wait before applying for another card. They're not clear like Capital One (six months) or Discover (12 months).

I don't think you need to wait six months if you have no other new card clutter and your only apps are with Chase. I think one month might be cutting it a little close but that three months may be OK.

Not the same cards, but I applied for my first Chase card (Marriott) on 10/25/2018 and was instantly approved. Applied for my second Chase card (Southwest Priority) on 1/11/2019 (so about 2.5 months apart) and got the "We'll let you know" message. Waited till I got the letter in the mail, which just told me to call to verify my identity. Once I did that I was approved.

I did get a somewhat lower SL on my second card, but I really have no way of knowing whether that had anything to do with applying relatively shortly after getting the Marriott card since there are so many other factors involved. I suspect it had more to do with the hit my scores took from adding a couple of new accounts and increasing my utilization in the 2.5 months between applications.

I applied for my Freedom Unlimited a little over 2 months after I opened my Freedom. For the Freedom Unlimited, I got a "just for you" offer on my online account. Chase has a 5/24 rule and you haven't told us anything about what other cards you have. If you've opened 5 credit cards in the last 24 months, you can't get a Chase card, and that applies to cards from all banks, not just Chase. Some people have gotten around 5/24 by apping when one or two of their cards, their newest one or two, haven't reported to the bureaus yet. Note though that business cards and retail cards don't count when counting for the 5/24 rule.

If you are under 5/24 right now, go for it if that's what you wanna do.

US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature $5000 | Chase Freedom $1500 | JCPenney $1500 | Bank of America Cash Rewards $500 | Discover It Cash Back $3500 | American Express Blue Cash Preferred $6000 | Chase Freedom Unlimited $1500

Chase has no problems with two new accounts in a short period of time if your profile is otherwise satisfactory in their eyes. I applied for a Chase card in August 2016, was not instantly approved. Called in next day; turns out they just wanted to verify my identity and then approved for $30,000 on the phone. Two months later, I applied for a different Chase card and that time was instantly approved, also for $30,000.

EX score was ok but not great. Chase did not seem bothered in the least by my applying for two cards back to back.

@iced wrote:

Right, but again, things have changed since 2 and a half years ago. All Chase cards fall under 5/24 now, and Chase is very skittish about two apps in one day. There are many datapoints of shutdowns occuring after multiple Chase apps.

If someone wants to roll the dice, have at it. I just think there's enough evidence to say Chase isn't accepting of this behavior anymore.

I'm definitely the outlier here, so take my account with a grain of salt. I app'd for the Freedom card. Got the 7-10 message, but it was visible under my Chase App login in about 5 hours. Waited one day, then apped for the Freedom Unlimited. Same thing happened. Was paranoid they were going to close one, but they didn't. I'm now on my 2nd month with both cards, no issues. So, as always, YMMV but if you don't need it for 2.5 months, I'd probably wait the 2 months and app then.

Chase's computer gets quite twitchy 😐

How do you know they were soft pulling your account every week? And how do you know it was because of the closeness of your apps rather than a factor like credit history/ income/ etc?

thanks

I know because I can see SPs on EX.

Chase knows better than me what my income is and how much I spend, and obviously, with 2 HPs for each card, they are well aware of my credit history. I was also over 5/24 with both apps, so I am sure there was a concern over "excessive credit seeking" on their end.

If what you listed was a big concern, it would have been a denial from the start or the SLs would have been a whole lot lower.
