There was a Supreme Court case last year, decided in AMEX favor, that merchants can not do this, if they accept AMEX at all.

I'm not being steered. I'm offered a discount.

The merchant will not say “I would like to steer you away from using your AMEX card” but the industry terminology for this discount offer is indeed “steering”.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_v._American_Express_Co.

My post that you responded at first was number 23 on the thread, I think. The begnning of the post was a reference to American Express reducing grocery rewards on my then BCP to 1% after approvimately $1500.00 of spend. BCP cash back is 6% to a ceiling of 6k. That didn't get an honorable mention. That actually happened so I downgraded the card to BCE. It was eventually resolved after a lot of time wasting for me. This is factual.

The remainder of your post was hypothetical upon hypothetical and off and running all the way to SCOTUS in what read to me as an attempt to throw shade on a merchant and place Amex as a victim. I apologize in advance if that is not your take on it. It's the way it read to me.

That most recent discount also makes a reference to carecredit.com if someone needs longer terms tha the practice can offer. I intened to pay in full at the time of service. Using a check is not a problem.

My post earlier today was not directed at you. Please try to understand that. I am amazed at what appears to me to be an amost pathological devotion to American Express on the site.

I actually consider American Express to be a shady operator after several issues since the middle of 2015. Each isssue involved redeeming a reward. If Amex does not want to be in the cash back business, exit the market. If Amex does not want to do revolvers, exit the market. There is no ethcal reason to reneg or attempt to reneg after the spend.

Thanks for understanding that this is not directed at you in any way. This is just the most receant and easiest post to find that shows what I am speaking of.

Thank your for reading.

Hi, just logged in to Amex and noticed my limit got cut from 30k to 15k. Nothing on my profile has changed. The only thing I can think of is I haven’t used the BCE in a month because another card has been serving my grocery needs for cash back.

Any idea why Amex would do this?

@staticvoidmain wrote:

Does anyone have data points on which card they do this to? Is it mostly BCE?

I don't think it's a matter of Amex doing it to BCE accounts. I think it's a matter of Amex CLDing the type of customers who often have a BCE.

It's a pretty mediocre card! I got one years ago and rarely use it. I just have it for the infrequent useful offer and the extra history. I'd be logging into Amex, anyway, and can call Platinum CS with any problems.

People who spend a lot on the Amex grocery category will probably have a BCP or Gold. 2% on gas is kind of pointless when there are so many 2%-on-everything cards. 1% on other stuff is not very appealing.

Travel enthusiasts will probably get an MR or points/miles-earning card. Perhaps something that will help them earn elite status with a hotel or airline. Less-specialized customers may favor a no-AF cash back card, and Cash Magnet is comparatively new.

Amex 3x makes it relatively easy to grow a BCE CL, yet it's a card that hardly anyone here will put serious spend on.

---

$95 AF / (6%-3%) = $3166.66

So at $3167 of grocery spend per year, BCP provides more in net rewards than BCE. If you want to adjust for the fact the AF is due now and the cash back is in the future, maybe adjust it to $3600.

Less than $3,600 / 12 months = less than $300 of grocery spend per month

On a $15k CL, $300 is only 2% average utilization.

I shouldn't suddenly have my chain cut to half the length and expect to be happy
about it. I have experienced the chain being longer. Suddenly I have a chain the length of someone
with a 680 score. My owner might get his leg bitten off the next time he comes to feed me, and I'll
run off to NFCU where they'll reward me with a long chain and not take it away because someone
decided to change policy.

Something else I've never understood, why give out a limit of X, and when you reach X times 0.8
they freak out.

Just give me a limit you're comfortable with me using to begin with and quit playing silly games!

Good post from CB14 above.

Any BCE cardholder that has very high (say, $25k+) limit no doubt has other rewards cards as well. I think it would be very rare to find a high limit BCE cardholder that has only that one card and uses it as their daily driver. That being said, as CB14 points out the card is quite meaningless outside of the 3% grocery category for the majority of people that have a few other cards. So then it comes down to how much can one really spend in a cycle on groceries? Definitely not enough to support "needing" a $25k+ limit, that's for sure.
