BBVA Compass ClearPoints Rewards Category Question

Any chance that Walmart would be classified under 'Retail' or 'Groceries' category? I can't seem to find a detailed list of what the BBVA categories include, just the general category names.

I have this card and it does NOT fall under the grocery category. Honestly this is the card I dislike the most and plan on cancelling it very soon. Terrible customer service as many have pointed out. There are better cards like Discover that are offering 5% off groceries but again not at Wal-Mart...pretty much across the board between cc companies.

You have to look up the MCC for your Walmart.

If it’s 5411, it should code as groceries. Since BBVA categories are so broad, I would be surprised if the 5411 stores don’t. Do a test purchase and see.

You dislike it and I want a second one. I have had no problems with it at all.

By the way UMB Simply Rewards counts all Walmart stores under their 3% since they specifically include discount stores in it. Card is pretty hard to get though, very conservative - anything more than 5 or 6 inquiries in 24 months seems to be a denial and they want high scores too, like 750 range.

You'll have to test it out and see how your local store codes.

In my case, I'm nearly certain my local Walmart did code as groceries, but since it's been over a year I can no longer pull the transaction to check for certain.

My 3x category has always been travel, and while I've not used this card in a while (I'm giving my attention to my WF Propel and CSP at the moment) it always worked as expected... no complaints.

As long as the Walmart you go to is 5411 it *should* code as groceries. The ones that code as discount stores may not. So most of my Walmarts are grocery but we have a few discount stores too.

I believe the cards that specifically exempt Walmart actually must be going beyond the MCC and specifically removing Walmart transactions from eligibility. I have heard of no such exemption with BBVA and they even coded my Woot Gourmet purchase as grocery which is still billed as wine.woot.

What I would be curious to see is if someone tests a discount store Walmart and gets the 3%. With the broad categories BBVA has, it wouldn’t surprise me if they do.
