Hi! Two quick questions

Just got approved (finally) for Chase Freedom Unlimited $5.6k...they pulled EQ in California (680 score according to FICO mailer that came with the card, 732 on credit karma).

When the card came, I was expecting the signature version since it was over $5k, but it was just the regular. Also was hoping not to have the raised numbers on the front, I thought they put the numbers on the back?

I gave them a call and they said they would send me a new card in the mail that is the signature version but they couldn’t confirm whether the numbers would be on the front or not...any thoughts from others??

Second question is curious when they’ll report this as a new card on my CR. Was hoping sooner than later so it can help out a bit with util.

Thanks!!

1) Freedom cards the numbers are printed on the front for ours. Might have been a recent change if they don't do that anymore but always assumed that was reserved for the higher tier cards with AFs embossing the info on the back.

2) Within the first two statements, more than likely the first statement if my sister's recent CSP is anything to go by.

Amazon / CSP have them on the back. F/FU on the front.

It will report when the statement closes unless you spend something and pay it off immediately then it will report sooner.

Gotcha! Thanks everyone!!

One odd thing was I was approved for the card on Sunday and got a notification of a hard pull from EQ, and then a day later after the card was already being shipped (I had them expedite since I’ll be traveling this weekend) I got another HP from Chase on EQ. Has anyone had that happen before?

I actually had a similar question about that. The blurbs/ads for FU on their site seem to indicate it's just a regular VISA standard. But i've seen pictures on The Point's Guy and One Mile @ a Time..etc where it's a Visa Sig. Anyone know if that's known/intentional?

It's a VS >5K and V <5K... when i converted my CSP with a $900 limit they wanted to move around some CL to make a VS at 5K or higher. I told them it's ok that it's not as I like my CL's where they are on the other cards. The CSP started off at 25.9K and I moved 25K to another card and just hold onto the card as a place holder if something else comes along that's enticing enough to PC to later.

Then reverts to 1.5% card. While the Freedom has the $150 SUB for $500 spend, and has 5% rotating categories.

I honestly can't decide on which one of thse to get, been going back and forth for teh last year.

@Janus “… I honestly can't decide on which one of these to get, been going back and forth…”

Let me help.

[1] Do you ever carry a balance? If you do, then these cards or their SUBs are not a good deal. Their interest rates negate any cash-back benefits. Cash-back cards are only a good idea for consumers who PIF every month, religiously.

[2] Are you getting the card for the sign-up bonus primarily and you don’t plan to keep the card long-term? If so, let’s evaluate the SUB. Looking at the SUB alone, the CFU SUB breaks even with the CF SUB if you spend exactly $10,000 per year. ($10K x extra .015 cash back in first year = $150, the same as the Freedom.)

So the questions become:

How much spending would you average on the card per month to stay within your current budget and PIF? If the answer is more than $833.33 (or $10K per year), you’ll be coming out with a higher bonus payout with the CFU. If it’s less than $833.33, you’re getting a better bonus payout with the CF.

However, there is a caveat. If you get the CF, which only pays 1% on spending in other than the rotating categories, you are losing out on half a percentage payout that the CFU would be giving you in addition to the bonus. So if you get the CF, do you have another card to use that pays at least 1.5% or more to use for any spending after meeting the FU SUB that doesn’t fit within the rotating categories? If not, you may still be getting a higher payout with the CFU.

[3] Are you getting the card for the long-term? Now, the SUB becomes a secondary question. That SUB is a short-term payout and consideration. That $150 or so isn’t going to change your life. So the bigger questions become:

Do you like simplicity and never having to think much about which credit card you reach for when you make a purchase? If this is you, the CFU is the better card.

Do you mind putting a little effort into managing rotating categories – activating them, remembering to carry and reach for the proper card at the proper time, remembering to stop using them when you reach the cap on your category for that quarter? If you enjoy playing the category game with all its’ complexities, the CF card is for you, especially if you have a slew of other cash-back cards from other banks that you rotate and use to get the most benefit from your spending. If you maximize your spending on the CF categories, you get an extra 3.5% back on $6K per year, equaling $210 annually.

Do you like maximizing your cash back but also prefer to combine your cash-back into one pool with one bank? Perhaps both the CFU and CF are for you. (This is my situation.) I have both cards and Chase allows you to pool points between accounts. I use the Freedom when I can use the rotating category. If I can't, I next use my Sapphire Reserve if it's dining out or travel, where I earn 3% (3 UR points per dollar.) If it doesn't fit into those categories, I use my Freedom Unlimited for everything else. (1.5%) You also get more value added when you redeem your cash-back into Ultimate Rewards points on the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve cards. (You get 25% more value on the Preferred and 50% more value on the Reserve!) Both cards have AFs but depending on your situation, you may get most if not all of it back either directly or indirectly. So, for example, if you got the $150 SUB on the Freedom, it would be worth $225 (or 22,500 UR points) if moved to a Chase Sapphire Reserve account or $187.50 (or 18,750 UR points) if moved to a Chase Sapphire Preferred account. (If you had just the CF and CFU cards, you can still move the cash-back as UR points between the cards and combine them. You just don’t get a “bonus”. ) UR points can also be transferred to travel partners (airlines and hotels) where you may be able to redeem them for even more value, depending on the situation.

@Anonymous wrote:

I assume that a person's score dictated what version they would get, reg Visa under ??? while anythiong over would get the Signature version.

I do remember on some apps it would say something to that affect.

I recently got an email informing me of the new offer for FU, and I'm guessing that the SUB is the 3% for the first year. Then reverts to 1.5% card. While the Freedom has the $150 SUB for $500 spend, and has 5% rotating categories.

I honestly can't decide on which one of thse to get, been going back and forth for teh last year.

Based on a variety of factors, internal algorithm criteria determines the tier level (Signature vs Platinum), pricing (APR%), and the assigned SL. Only 2 of these can eventually be upgraded or changed, the tier level (periodic review or by request) and the CL (via HP unless auto-CLI). Essentially, for some Chase products, an individual could get approved for a $9,000 SL but only qualify for Platinum.

Thanks, good to know. Just interesting they upgraded my to Signature the day after I received a regular one in the mail. But we’ll see what actually gets sent over! I’m guessing a glitch in the system as someone else already said.
