Amex Gold adding authorized user

So I’ve been piggy backing off my brother and he’s been adding me as an authorized user on his cards. It’s been helping get my score up. He tried to add me to his Amex PRG and it said we can’t give u a decision right now you’ll receive a letter in 14 days. I’ve never had an amex so I never burned them. Is this normal? Adding me as an authorized user to any other card always just went thru. This is the first time we’ve seen a message like this. If anyone else has experienced this I’d like to hear the outcome. Thanks

It is possible to be denied as an Amex AU (I assume it is their way of protecting the primary cardholder from default). For what it's worth... I added my GF when she had 600ish scores as an AU on my PRG, she received the "14 day" message, and was finally approved.

I did not have an issue when being added as an authorized user on 2 cards. So, no experience with this. However, I am interested to know what happens. Please update when you receive a decision.

So as stated above your reply ... what he said is
what worried me ... my credit score ... it’s in the low 500s ... but 2 days ago I received an email from American Express with confirmation of email address update to my account. I’ve never had an American Express account. They’ve never had my email until adding an authorized user. The email was For an American Express gold card and it shows an account ending number which is different from the primary account number. It also says thank you for your card membership. Has my name not the primary owners. This leads me to believe I have been approved. I’m not sure if my brother has received any emails about the situation but I don’t see why they would send me an email and pretty much give me a different account number if they weren’t sending me a card. So hopefully in a few days I have my card. We did the request may 25th and it’s not exactly an approval email but they responded may 27th much quicker than the 14 days. So fingers crossed and everything works out how I think it is

Sounds like you've been added! Congratulations! Reach out to your brother to see if he has heard anything. Hopefully, you will be receiving your card soon.

I am pretty much 100% sure I’ve been added. Logging into the main account and clicking on the gold card appears a drop down menu and u can click on view additional card members. After clicking my name appears!! So happy that I wasn’t denied and I don’t have to worry anymore. They never sent any emails about being added or approved they just kind of did it.

I received my card today! It’s the heavy metal gold card. My brothers card is the flimsy one that says premier rewards. Surprisingly it says member since 2017 but ive never had an American Express and my brothers card says member since 2018. I Activated it and tried it everything’s good!

The cards get sent to the AU. The main account holder can activate the card, but that's it other than being able to set spending limits and alerts.

Is your brother aware he can request the new metal version? PRG is no longer the naming. It is AMEX Gold.

Is your brother aware he can request the new metal version? PRG is no longer the naming. It is AMEX Gold.

Thank you! I don’t think he really cares ... he doesn’t use it ... I’ve had possession of the card the past few months I just gave it back to him since I got mine. He was helping me out and letting me use it but now that he has it back maybe he’s going to start using it again. But to him it’s just another card. I’ve been trying to tell him about rewards 0% apr balance transfers cash backs and utilizing the most out of his cards. It’s hard to take advice from someone who’s messed up their credit. I’m better at financially advising then doing it for myself. He’s slowly understanding and making the best out of everything. But honestly for me I was excited when I got the metal card. I never thought I would have it, and for him trusting me to make $4-5k purchases a month really makes me grateful. I guess it all gives me motivation and hope. I have another chance and from here it only gets better.

You may ask him to add you as AU to a revolver (if he has one), since Gold card is not factored in the utilization calculation.

Good to know. I was out of town when my auth user cards came and the primary account holder and I share the same address. So, they just gave me the cards and I didn't pay attention to who it was addressed to, etc. But, good info.

My score isn’t anything impressive atm but a whole lot better than what it used to be. Feb 10, 2019 was the lowest my score was which was 488. I’m currently at 551 .. with 6 collections ... 4 hard inquiries... 11 accounts and only 6 of those are open, the other 5 have been closed/charged off. 3 accounts are AU from my brother. The other 3 are my car loan, a secured citi card and a credit one card. I got the secured and credit one within the last 2 months. The Amex doesn’t show up yet. I have 95% payment history and 65% utilization. Hopefully by the end of the year I can be in the mid 600s ... I can only hope
