GF Retention on AMEX Bonvoy

DGF has an AMEX SPG basic card from 2017. She did not get an upgrade offer in 2018, so applied separately for the AMEX Bonvoy Brilliant. Two AMEX.

Two months ago she applied for CSR, instapproval for $34k. We finished up the SUB spend recently for that.

With the two AX, she does not want to keep the basic $95 card, so we waited on hold two weeks ago to try to close it, never got off hold for half an hour and hung up.

Tried again tonight, and after a few minutes on hold, got a CSR. She told him she would like to close the card and move the limit. He clicked thru some of the steps, but came back with an offer of 20,000 points for $2k spend in 3 months. I gave her the thumbs up, so now we work on that.

Her $95 AF doesn’t come up until September and that isn’t even a requirement of this spend offer.

While I'm not a fan of points and travel cards that's a great retention offer. 20K of whatever makes it worthwhile for minimal spend. Still hitting that 10% threshold for points vs MSR.

Yes, first retention offer. She only has had the two AMEX cards.

I have not gotten retention offers on the few AMEX cards I closed, but a number of mine have been upgrade bonus offers. With the elimination of the airline credit Delta reimbursement I am looking closely at which AMEX cards I want to keep. That might trigger retention offers, but I’m not holding my breath.
