Hard to say what their typical UW criteria might be. Of course, there are other alternatives to Coast Direct if your brother is attempting to establish his own credit. From their site, if he clears the first 2 hurdles it's likely he could potentially get considered.

Start a CredIt Account wIth New Coast DIrect? Processing Fee:

We require a one-time up front Processing Fee of $95 to be paid in full before the Credit Account can be approved. If for any reason your Credit Account is not approved a full refund of the $95 processing fee will be full refunded along with any applicable down payments. Please allow 3-4 business days for bank refund policies.

Minimum Order Requirements:

To complete the Credit Account application, please see our online catalog for thousands of top quality products. You must have a minimum of $100 in your shopping cart to complete the online application.

Only reason I suggested coast direct is because the start amount is low plus they give you a 5000 credit line rather than cap or disco giving me 300 to 500 with a 200 deposit. An a 5000 tradeline will look better then 2 small tradelines, and he'll get bigger credit limits in the future

Or he can get an overpiced catalog junk card .

There is nothing wrong with having zero credit and starting out secured.

Hsving a 5k credit line on this kind of credit wont make another lender match. Plenty of people who have an even better card, Navy Federal , and get 25k limit and becsuse Navy is more of an outlier, other lenders dont necessarily feel the need to match that. Build your credit right snd in time , the limits will be there.

A $5K credit line from a company that requires one to make a purchase is not a match for lenders like Cap1 and Discover, even if it is for a secured or low-limit card.

Creating a great credit profile and history starts at the first rung of the ladder. It's not good to skip steps because one misstep, and he's back at the first rung. IMO, climbing the ladder slowly--one step at a time--will prepare him for future credit successes.
