USAA took care of me early on so I don't have an old "getting started" Disco still in the sock drawer. It seems like a great company with top tier support and decent rewards. For some reason it still feels like a hole in my lineup.

Am I an idiot for wasting a Chase slot? Please talk sense into me. November is going to be a big international spending month for me (UK). There are better no FTF cards with nice SUBs you could get like the CSP and get a nice one-time 60,000 point bonus if you spend like $3-4K in the first three months. Otherwise I think HSBC and PayPay have 3% and 4% initial sign up cash back periods, normally 1.5% on both of those, and they also have no FTF. Might want to check all of those out.

For the Discover, the categories have been great this year. I've been using the restaurants a ton this quarter and the previous one was gas which was cool as this quarter has been 5% on the Chase Freedom. They match that cashback for the first year so you'll get 10% back on the categories and 2% back on everything else. I also love all of the card designs they offer. I get compliments on mine all of the time. That's my 2¢ on that.

I like my DISCOVER IT card. May be a little redundant with CF with similar rotating categories, but not always. A small feature I like about DISCOVER is their cash back option at certain retailers, like grocery stores. You can make a purchase and request cash back, like $20 or $40, like your debit card, of course with no fee or interest.

Ooh! You could get both...lol Just have to work out your timing I suppose. I recently got the CSP for the lovely bonus points. I had a couple large purchases I was already going to make so I waited until the card came to max out that $4k spend right away. I don't have the DISCO yet (gardening til spring 2020). My husband does tho and loves that the categories rotate with his card and my CF so we get the 5% back on gas nearly all year. The CSP doesn't offer much for an everyday spend like the DISCO. For me, I wanted it for the travel benefits and initial bonus points. Whatever makes most sense for your current spend needs/habits is what I would go with. Chase does have a draw to it just because of the exclusivity with their app rules tho lol. That's probably why I have the CF, CFU and CSP 🤦🏻‍♀️😆.

I had one as a secured when i started my journey and i got another a year later that has grown a lot. I highly recommend discover for the 5% categories. I'm more of a CB kinda guy tho.

Chase did me wrong and i lost a card that would be over 20 years old now, so i'm Never/24. To each there own i guess.

I recently went 6/24 and I have no worries about it. I'd only worry about 5/24 if there is something you really want from Chase. Although, if you are going abroad for a while, I'd shop around for a no FTF Visa.

Any thoughts on a card for both SUB and staying power?

...if we're being honest I also really want to hit that Disco luv button...

You do not need a Discover card. You don't want to waste time figuring out which category is in force for 5%. And you don't want to waste space in your wallet with a card that isn't accepted in so many places.

IMHO the only thing it's good for is its balance transfer offers, but (a) they've been making them less available lately, and (b) they're no better than the offers you could get from a credit union non-rewards platinum card.

Looking at the cards in your wallet, it certainly would be a good idea to diversify, but not in that direction.

DISCOVER is accepted at restaurants, gas stations, Amazon, and the other 5% categories. A very small percentage of places don't take it, and those are mostly in the 1% categories.

And how hard is it to activate the 5% categories? Lol, set up a reminder and you'll get a link emailed to you to do it. If activating a category is that tough to do, I bet pulling the card out of your wallet is a real chore too.

How widely is Discover accepted in the UK?

This is a very good point. I went abroad to Germany and Prague recently. I had a brand new Discover IT Cash (restaurant rotating this quarter) and Savor One card. The Discover card was only accepted at one location the entire trip and I tried everywhere because eating out while traveling is something I consider a highlight of trips. The Savor One was more frequently accepted. My CSP was accepted everywhere but I left it at a gas station halfway through the trip. We realized an hour later after driving off and I was able to cancel my CSP on the app within a minute. I had a new one in the mail when I was home a few days later. I think chase is the better option if you are traveling. I do love my discover card and will be trying to maximize the one year rewards but go for chase first in my opinion.
