Discover Cash Back @ Store's Pay Terminal...

Since DSC was generous enough to give me a $3k CLI the other day--I decided to use the card for the 5% on groceries this quarter. When I went to run my card yesterday, it offered me the option of receiving cash-back at the pay terminal--something I didn't even know was an option...! I don't use this card for advances so I don't have my PIN memorized (not sure if I even needed it) and I didn't utilize the cash back offer. But my question is: If I had--would it have been considered a cash advance or part of the purchase?

It's not a cash advance
You do not earn any rewards on the cashback amount, tho.

Totally cool perk, yes you can get cash and it is treated as part of a purchase, NO transaction fees or atm fees. Your regular APR applies. Does not work in all stores but they have a list don't have exact link but google discover cash over your purchase for list....

Right, but as Remedios says, no rewards on the cash. So it's a time saver (don't have to go to an ATM) rather than anything particularly exciting.

A lot of people don’t even bother carrying their ATM/debit cards anymore and just use cash over for quick cash. If I was actually out of the house often enough to worry about it, I wouldn’t carry my debit cards either. I would advance from Navy if I needed something more than the $20-60 cash over offers but if I needed cash, a pack of gum and a cash over would suffice most of the time.

Yes just noticed this when I was last at Sam's(makes sense seeing that Wal-Mart does it). Great way to get quick cash without worrying about atm fee on small amount. Another reason why discover is great :-).

Sure, but others do carry debt cards for things like rewards checking (and I use my Square Cash a lot). My comment was more because I am rewards focussed: if you could get rewards on the cashover, that would be exciting to me. As it is, the few times I need cash I need more than the limit, so I go to an ATM...

LOL well I use it as 20 bucks cash at the supermarket to buy lottery tickets, so kind of rewarding.......

This is me. I just never use my debit card, so the bank eventually deactivates it over time. After about the third time of gettig it reactivated, I decided it really wasn't worth it. Being able to grab a few bucks in cash from the Discover is great for when I am out and about, and don't feel like stopping at the bank.

That's very handy, thanks! And there's a FAQ at the bottom detailing there's no transactio fee, same APR as purchases if you don't pay in full, and: "Cash Over transactions are limited to $120 every 24 hours with no monthly limit. Most stores have a cash over limit. Please check with your local store"

I've done Cash Over at Safeway and Walmart, both have a $60 limit per transaction, but I didn't know there was a $120 per 24 hours limit but no monthly limit. I use this regularly as I don't bank locally and I think it's easier than figuring out which ATMs aren't one armed bandits (fees).

Discover Cashover is a lovely feature.. Basically its a "small" CA thats treated as a purchase... Great for saving a trip to the bank for small amounts you might otherwise go to an ATM for... And (this is ancedotal) it can be deactivated... Was in a grocery store and some older person tried to cashover her card.. And the person in control of her card account had somehow disabled cashover... Was interesting.....

No rewards but no fees either...

OT, but consider a online bank that refunds all ATM fees! (I use TIAA)

Ah, yes, one of the best features of the Discover card: cash over. As has been said, you can get cash over your purchase amount at most major grocery store chains, as well as Walmart and Sam's Club. While it is treated more or less as a purchase, you don't earn rewards on it. It's very convenient, IMHO.

Not many other cards offer this feature. IIRC, the Walmart and Sam's Club store cards and co-branded MCs allow for cash over when used at Walmart or Sams. I can't think of any others.

Wow, I have had my discover for over a year and had no idea I could do this without a cash advance fee. I always saw that option and figured it would for sure be treated as a cash advance.

Usually I take out more than $60 at the ATM though, the rare times that I use it (IE time to go to the dispensary . I actually stopped carrying a debit card on me most of the time and I leave it in the sock drawer. If the store limit were $100 I’d definitely make use of this feature.

The amount varies per store. Many grocery stores allow $100. Or you could you just do it two days in a row at a store with a lower cashover limit.

Yes, me too! I was Aldi last night and got the cash over option with my disco. It's grocery quarter and I'm buying enough Aldi and Publix gift cards to get through the rest of the year.

I have had my Discover card for almost two years and did not know this was an option. I was in Wally's World and saw the cashback option. Fearful it was a cash advance I didn't touch it. Now I know I can. I decided to use my Discover card as my daily driver and put some spend on it until the end of the year. Hopefully, Discover will show me some luv in December when I request my semi-annual CLI.

I searched for cash advance and found this cash over post. Nice to know I can get some cash without the cash advance fees attached.
